Description

Coal is worked in this township [Bearpark] at Broom Park Colliery and at Bearpark Colliery. At the former the workable seams are the Hutton 3 ft. 6 in., at a depth of 30 fathoms ; Harvey, 2 ft., 64 fathoms ; Busty, 5 ft. 6 in., 75 fathoms ; and the Brockwell, 3 ft. 2in., 94 fathoms. The Hutton produces a prize gas coal, and the other seams give excellent coking coal.

Broom is a scattered village about three miles to the west of Durham. Here is a chapel of ease dedicated to St. Katherine, and a few colliery houses have also been erected since the sinking of the colliery a short distance off.

Whellan's 1894 Directory of County Durham
