     My ggg grandfather - MJC

He was a licensed victualler from London. He was born 12 Feb 1809 and baptised at St Giles Cripplegate in London - as were some of his children.

According to census records, he married an Ann Maria. I believe that to be Ann Maria Seares, but am not 100% sure on that yet.

Bell's Weekly Messenger of May 23, 1830 reports the bankruptcy of "W. BELTON, Skinner street, Bishopsgate street, victualler, June 1, 8, and July 2, at the same place. Att. Duncan, Lincoln's Inn fields."

I cannot find him in the 1841 census.

He appears in the 1851 census as Licensed Victualler born Oxford Street and living in Hornsey, Middlesex.

In 1861 he is an Appraiser living at 4, Canal Terrace, Stepney, London.

His family, including wife, appear in the 1871 census but not him. Possibly he had died, but I have no information on that yet; his wife's civil status is not recorded.

Note for:   Ann Maria Seares,   18 MAY 1806 - 1880         Index

Individual Note:
My (Michael John Collinson) ggg grandmother, if the identification of Thomas Sears Belton's mother is correct.

She first appears with reasonable certainty as Ann Maria Bilton [sic], born abt 1811 in St George in the East, Middlesex, England as wife of William Belton and living in Hornsey Middlesex. Later census references and her death index indicate she was actually born around 1807 - it is not unusual for census entries for younger couples to lie to make the bride appear younger than the groom and then get more relaxed/honest later in life. She had a son Thomas Sears/Seares Belton - suggesting that her maiden name *might* be Sears or Seares.

I've a marriage record of 1828 St. Botolphs, London, UK ... but unfortunately I've not recorded the source and have no recollection of where it came from. It is not an LDS record and does not come up on Google. From Barbara Belton perhaps?

This information suggests a match with an LDS Indvidual Record of an Ann Maria Seares, born 18 May 1806 and baptised 3rd June 1806 at Saint Leonards, Shoreditch, London. Thomas Seares and Sarah have another 5 children (Thomas, William Rowland, Daniel Streeter, Sarah Elisabeth, Hephzibah Helen) registered in the same parish, so these are almost certainly siblings. A Thomas Seares and Sarah also have a later Charles Alfred Seares birth (June 1812) registered in St. George in the East, Stepney - maybe he is anothe brother.

She almost certainly died in 1880 in the Mile End registration district of London.

Hi Mike, I am still pondering the Irish connection and i have gone over the properties owned by Peter Belton and there is none in Ireland. I thik i will try to find his Will and have a look because his wife Sarah may be of Irish decent. There again it my be Ann Maria? whichever it is, its a real mystery.
When Peter died he left a lot of properties which went to his own Auction house. I cannot get my scanner to work but i am going to transribe some of them to give you an idea of the wealth of this family

The Times. 7 Sept 1886

Liverpool Arms, Barking Road, Barking
Bolingbroke Hotel, Dashwood road
15 Leather lane
Shop and residence Mitcham Surrey
Shop and residence Holloway ( Brand Road)
177 High St, Stoke Newington
Stock of the City of London Brewery company
Globe insurance stock
Falcon Tavern, Fetter lane

These were but a few of the businesses that the family had, plus residences in Hampstead and Myddleton sq London. Thomas Dad Wiiliam seemed to be either the Landlord for Peter or the owner
of many Pubs in and around Cripplegate. Skinner st, Banner st and Whitecross st were where i have found William and Family living above the premises.
There is also a solictor who did the legal side of thing for the family called Thomas Dignam, whos connected to us by marriage but i have not found out much about them other than Belton and Dignam were a strong business duo.

Well mike, thats all for now.
Take care
Barbara
