Note for: Fray Jose Urbina de Esparragosa, 19 MAR 1810 - 2 MAR 1863
Index
Occupation: Date: BET 1840 AND 1850
Place: Parish priest of Baler, Quezon Province, Philippines
Individual Note: According Dr. Andreas "Andy" Angara, 75% of the Spanish mestizo Filipinos are descended from Catholic priests Mestizos from the immediate area around Manila were usually offspring of lower class Spanish who were not allowed into the rural areas. Rural mestizos however, generally had higher class antecendents, i.e. the priests.
Fray Jose Urbina de Esparragosa, O.F.M was the parish priest of Baler, from June 7, 1840 to November 26, 1850.
Fray Jose Urbina seems to have been quite a chap. Not only siring an entire dynasty from five children (Maria Dolores, mother of President Quezon; Zeneida, wife of Pedro Poblete Aragon; Sabino, Filomena and unknown) with Brigida Molina while a man of the cloth, he was an excellent priest and responsible many engineering projects in what is now Aurora province. Again according to Dr. Angara, an irrigation project he put in is still supplying 3 barangays today (2005) with water. When the church learned he violated the chasity vow, he was banished to Magdalena, Laguna until his death at Santa Cruz Hospital on, 2 March 1863.
His grandaughter, Emilia Molina Aragon, (daughter of Zeneida), married Teodora "Doro" Angara and is the mother of Congressman Jose "Pepe" Angara.

An excerpt from some reminiscences about Baler:
"In spite of civilization's encroachments, the shores of Baler that are blessed with beautiful sandy beaches and coral reefs still appear as they must have been for hundreds of years past. During my youthful years, it was easy to conjure a vision of the church of Baler as garrison of the Spanish colonial army; the canal in Kalediyan constructed in 1846; the fortresses in (Castillo) atop Point Baja (Ermita), and by the estuary (sabangan) of Baler Kinalapan-Pingit River erected in 1847; Lieutenant Gillmore's party ambushed and captured by Filipino insurgents on, 12 April 1899, and the lean-tos scattered along the savanna of Pingit all the way to Dibalo were Negritoes sanctuary.
Nearly all the historical landmarks in the Valley of Baler were, engineered by Fray Jose Urbina de Esparragosa, O.F.M. His leadership and foresightedness, led to the construction of a canal in Kalediyan to irrigate farmland. On the estuary by the bank of Baler Kinalapan-Pingit River and the promontory of Point Baja, a fortress had been built to counter piratical activities of the moors (moros) marauding towns along the Pacific seaboard in which Baler was no exception. Scandalously, however, his remarkable accomplishment while parish priest of Baler was not his engineering achievements, but the amorous life he shared with companion, Brigida Molina. In ten years that they lived together, he fathered five children. Hence, when the church learned he violated the vow to live the life of celibacy, the church banished him to Magdalena, Laguna until his death at Santa Cruz Hospital on, 2 March 1863. "

The Forts of Aurora
...
At the southeastern part of the Labasin-Sabang beach is the estuary of Baler (Kinalapan-Pingit) River that empties into the Pacific Ocean. In 1847, Castillo (fort/watchtower) came into existence. Two were erected: One in the promontory of Point Baja (Ermita), and the other on the outer-loop of Baler (Kinalapan-Pingit) River by the outfall of the Outer Banks. The constructions were the innovation and ingenuity of Fray Jose Urbina de Esparragosa, the parish priest of Baler, from June 7, 1840 to November 26, 1850.

I have just started my family tree, but the information I have so far is. My G Grandfather is David Tweedie born 26 July 1840 in Rerrick. His father was james and mother Janet nee Mc vitie. I have ordered his birth certicicate from the scotlnds people web site. I have a copy of david's wedding registration. David married Ellen Mcvitie his cousin in 1871 in Earlston berwick. One of their sons, Jonh is my grandfather. Two of Jonn's sons emigrated to Australia and i have just been the met my cousins for the first time. They have no details. My mother was a tweedie, I have found Ellen on the 1881 census but david is mising. details of 1861 and 1871 would be good. I am sure ther is a link. My mother was a tweedie. I believe there are no male relatived left with the tweedie name..

I am in Whitby but my family come from Redcar, which is where John finally settled. James stayed in Midlesbrough.
