He was a graduate of Tokyo University and was an interpreter during the Second World War occupation of the Philippines. He committed suicide during that period, perhaps as a result of his experiences.

Individual Note:
Born Shiremoor, Northumberland in c.1896 and emigrated to Canada along with his married sister Elizabeth. My father John Collinson stayed with Elizabeth twice in the 1930s but after that time all family contact has been lost. He apparently was a Shipwright so probably worked in the Great Lakes shipping trade.

According to the most likely birth regitration index, his second name was 'Williams' (not William) - could this reflect a family name in his mother's line??

Occupation:
Place:   Worked in a shipyard in Wallsend.

Individual Note:
Born Heworth, Co. Durham [Source - 1901 Census]. Killed in First World War [Source - relative John Dunn Collinson].

In 1901 he was 11 and living in Wallsend with his parents. I (Michael Collinson) have not been able to find any record of what happened to him after that. Unfortunately many British WWI military records were lost or damaged by WWII bombing.

2010-02-07 Update: WWI "Burnt Records" are now available online. Unfortunately, there is still no trace of him. Could he have emigrated first? He is not to be found in the England & Wales 1911 Census yet.

2010-08-02 Update: In what is likely to be the ship that his father John Collinson sailed to South Africa in 1909, is another J. Collinson, Mechanic (no age). Could this be him?

Source - Michael Collinson, grand nephew:

My Great Uncle (Gar's sister) was Jules and his wife Peggy lived at 55, The Droveway, Hove, Sussex, Tel: 01273-554274. He worked in the motor trade, I [Michael Collinson, grand nephew] recall him talking about working in the Rolls Royce paint shop and painfully putting on and polishing many layers of paint. In the 1970s he either worked for or had recently retired from a Rover car showroom. May be he owned it - they had a very nice detached house with just so furnishings and antiques and a just so ornamental garden. He was a very jovial chap, when I was very young I felt rather intimidated by his ragging and jokes - in hindsight always well meant.

They fell out with Gar in the late 70's/early eighties, refusing to speak to one another, and then refused to see me in the early eighties when I made a special trip to Brighton while working in Saudi. Peggy had some sort of facial/neck growth, which I figured had something to do with it. The last time I'd seem them was I think on a cycling trip. I think I came to them from the return ferry after a trip to Holland or perhaps from Cambridge University, certainly in the years 1976 - 1980. Uncle Jules died just a few days after I married, Aunty Peggy lived for some time after that but I never saw her. She was "taken in" by a next door neighbour who I think was after the estate, which must have been a fair sized amount.
