John Collinson is my (Michael John Collnson) ggg grandad.John Collinson is my (Michael John Collnson) ggg grandad.

John and Margaret Collinson are the parents of Joseph Collinson, born 1838, my gg grandad. The link is firmly established by the 1841 and 1851 census which shows the family living in Kenton, a mining village in Northumberland close to Newcastle.

John and his oldest child John were born in the parish of Romaldkirk, a small village on the Yorkshire - Durham county border on the high reaches of the River Tees between Barnard Castle and Middleton-in-Tees. If born in the village itself, the houses are mostly 18th century so it is likely his house is still there.

There are many, many Collinson in the Middleton-in-Teesdale area - so this would appear to be the "ancestral home area".

He married in or before 1820 and lived initially in Romanldkirk but by about 1831/33 is living in Kenton, Northumberland - probably to switch from lead to coal mining. Children, Ann and John, are 15 in 1841 so born about 1825-26, and James, born about 1829 - 1830 were born in Romaldkirk. Hannah, born about 1831-32 and Isabella, 17(?) in 1851 so born 1833-34 was born in Kenton.

There is a possible connection between the Romaldkirk lead mining area and Kenton. Kenton was on a private estate. The Blackett-Beaumont family, probable scion in the 1830s: Thomas Wentworth Beaumont, had extensive coal and leadmining interests, including the Weardale area and may have been the owners of the estate at the time - Sir William Blackett had bought half of the Kenton estate in 1688, Walter Calverley Blackett bought the other half in 1743. - more research needed. See http://www.tomorrows-history.com/Items/OriginalIE/ItemNO1000470002.htm There is a collection of papers, "Allendale Estate, estate, manorial and lead mining papers" that includes rent records for Kenton. The collection appears to be in the hands of Northumberland County Council, Amenities Division, Northumberland Record Office, Melton Park, North Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE3 5QX., Telephone: 00 44 (0)191 2362680. Blackett seems to have been pioneering the use of steam engines at mines and helped inspire George Stepenson.

He would probably have worked at the Kenton and Coxlodge cola mine that was abandoned by 1888.

He appears to have died in Jan-Mar 1853 in Kenton.

"[George] Stephenson now applied himself to the study of the locomotives that were already constructed. At Wylam he inspected "Black Billy," [Blackett] and at the collieries of Kenton and Coxlodge he saw one of Blenkinsop's Leeds engines draw sixteen coal wagons with an aggregate weight of seventy tons at the rate of about three miles an hour. Yet this engine proved unsteady and costly to work. An effective and economical locomotive engine still was to be invented, and to this object Stephenson devoted his attention."

Source - http://www.history.rochester.edu/steam/brown/chpt7.html
From The History of the First Locomotives In America
From Original Documents And The Testimony Of Living Witnesses
By William H. Brown, 1871.

"... These experiments, though failures in their results, were followed up by a Mr. Blackett, of Wylam, whose persevering efforts paved the way for the future labors of George Stephenson.

To make his experiments Mr. Blackett ordered one of the locomotives of the Trevithick patent, and also employed rack - rails and tooth driving - wheels like Blankensop's, and had his road altered for the occasion. This engine was the most awkwardly-constructed machine imaginable. It had a single cylinder six inches in diameter, and a ftywheel working on one side to carry the cranks over the dead-points. The boiler was of cast iron, and the weight of the whole was about six tons; a wooden frame was supported by four pairs of wheels, and a barrel of water placed upon another frame sustained by two pairs of wheels served as a tender. When all was ready, the word xvas given to go ahead, but the engine would not move an inch; when it was finally set in motion, it flew to pieces, and the workmen and spectators, with Mr. Blackett at their head, scattered and fled in every direction The machine, or what was left of it, was taken off the road, and afterward a portion of it was used as a pump at one of the mines.

Mr. Blackett was not, however, discouraged. His next experiment was an engine with a single eight-inch cylinder, which was fitted with a fLy-wheel, the drivingwheel on one side being cogged in order to enable it to travel on the rack-rail. This engine proved more successful than its predecessors, and, although it was clumsy and unsightly, it was capable of drawing eight or nine wagons loaded with coal to the shipping-point at Lemington; its weight, however, was too great for the road, and the cast-iron rails were continually breaking. Its work was by no means successful. It crept along at a snail's pace, sometimes taking six hours to go five miles to the landing-place. It was continually getting off the track, and there it would stiek. Horses would then have to be sent out to pull it on the track. The engine often broke down; its pumps, plugs, and cranks would get wrong, then the horses again would be needed to drag the machine back to the shop. In fact, it at last got so cranky that the horses were frequently sent out to follow the engine to be in readiness to draw it along when it gave out. At last it was abandoned.

Blackett persevered. In 1813 he made an experiment with a frame upon four wheels, to deterlnine the muchdisputed point, the adhesive power of a smooth-surfaced driving wheel upon a smooth- surfaced rail. Six men were placed upon this frame, which was fitted up with a windlass attached by gearing to the several wheels. When the men worked the windlass, the adhesion was found sufficient to enable them to propel the machine without slipping. This experiment settled the difficulty which was always thought to be in the way of the successful use of the locomotive upon the smooth surface of a railroad with snnooth-surfaced drivingwheels, proving that rack- rails, tooth-wheels, endless chains, and legs, were useless requisites to the successful use of a locomotive with smooth- surfaced drivingwheels upon a smooth-surfaced railroad-track, and drawing loaded wagons behind it."

"WHILE Mr. Blackett was building locomotives and experimenting with them, George Stephenson, then enjoying a high reputation for his ingenuity and skill as a machinist, was deliberating in his mind on the possibility of locomotives being made and improved so as eventually to supersede the use of horse-power upon tram-roads; but the want of means, and the difficulty of obtaining skillful mechanics at that early day to do the requisite work, retarded him in his long cherished idea of making a machine that would answer effectually the purpose for which the locomotive Eras intended. True it was that Blankensop's engine, built in 1813, had been in use upon the tram-way at Wylam, and improvements were subsequently made so that a machine had been constructed and run upon the tramway between Kenton and Cox Lodge, which was enabled to-draw after it sixteen loaded cars, of about seventy tons, at the rate of three miles an hour. Yet this engines and others like it, were far from being perfect, or adapted to the purpose for which they were intended, being clumsy, cumbrous, and awkward, in all their movements. Mr. Stephenson saw one of these at work, and when asked by one of his companions what he thought of it, he replied that he " could make a better one than that;" and, to accomplish this, he devoted his whole mind and energies, the result of which we will show hereafter."

' Despite the extensive use of wagon-ways from the pit head to a shipment staith on one of the main rivers, there is no evidence of the early use of rails underground anywhere in the Northumberland and Durham area. John Buddle, jr. (1773-1840), the most famous mining engineer of his day, stated in 1807 that wooden railways were first used underground about 1778. Presumably he was referring to lines in the actual workings. An exceptional example of a wagon-way in tunnel was that shown on the map as "subterraneous tunnel" running from East Kenton to Scotswood. - Galloway's "Annals of Coal Mining" (1898) states that the tunnel is said to have been made about 1770 by Christopher Bedlington. A lengthy account of it is given by Abraham Rees in his "Cyclop?dia" of 1819 under the heading "Coal." He says that the pit "which can be entered with the greatest ease and safety, is in the vicinity of Newcastle, viz, East Kenton colliery, the property of Messrs. Knowsley and Chapman. . . . The steath is by the river side, about four miles above Newcastle, a pleasant excursion by water." The visitors were then seated in "small empty coal waggons, capable of containing two persons each, seven of which are drawn along a rail-way by one horse." Rees describes the tunnel, or subterraneous passage, as "6 ft. high, about the same breadth, and three miles long: . . . The passage is in general hewn out of solid rock . . . Where there is not rock, it is arched with brick or stone. The water from the pit runs down by the side of the railway to the river Tyne. At intervals there are double railways." '

Houghton-le-Spring

"This populous parish includes the townships of Houghton-le-Spring, and Warden-Law. The ancient parish consisted of the townships of Hetton-le-Hole, Penshaw, East Rainton, West Rainton, Newbottle, East and Middle Herrington, West Herrington, Offerton, South Biddick, Burn Moors, Morton Grange, Cocken, Moor House, Moorsley, Eppleton, Little Eppleton, and Warden Law, and was bounded by Bishopwearmouth on the north-east, by the river Wear on the north, by Chester-le-Street on the west, by St. Giles parish on the south-west, Pittington and Easington on the south, and Dalton-le-Dale and Seaham on the east.

[From History, Topography and Directory of Durham, Whellan, London, 1894]

Close to Hetton-leHole is "Littletown, once called "South Pittington," later Little Pittington, and in 1613 Littletown, was probably the name of the farm near the village. The present village of Littletown has arisen near the colliery worked by the Earl of Durham. It lies on rising ground less than a mile south of the church, and contains a school, reading-room, and a Wesleyan chapel." May be this colliery is why she is there.

Note for:   Hannah Collinson,   BEF 6 OCT 1832 - BET JAN AND MAR 1906         Index

Individual Note:
My gg grandaunt. According to Joe Collinson, she married Thomas Simpson. I'm not sure of the source or veracity of that information but it certainly all fits with census inforrmation. Before marrying, she appears to have been a house servant - the 1851 Census finds her in Urpeth, Co. Durham along with her sister.

Not living with father. This is almost certainly her; the age is a year off but a sister, Margaret, appears to be with her too, too much of a coincidence surely.

This agrees with Joe Collinson's research, but I'm not sure how he knew that this is this Hannah Collinson. However, a correspoding 1891 Census entry for the couple matches her POB and DOB.
