Born in Torthorwald, Dumfriesshire and became a Blacksmith. From the birth and death places of his older children, he appears to have settled in Stockmoss, Rerrick Iin Kirkcubbrightshire by 1826 and remained there until about 1847 when he moved to nearby Castle Douglas (Kelton) where he lived at least during the 1851 and 1861 Census. He probably passed over his Stockmoss blacksmith business to son John Tweedie who remained there until his death. James died of old age in 1879 at 24 Queensbury St., Dumfries - wife Janet shown as Widow in 1881 Census, Rerrick.
