Hi Michael,

I don't know who James McMurray was married to, but his daughter Martha McMurray was born in Wigton, Scotland c1833 and married George Redhead on 9th June 1853 in Walton on the Hill. Martha died in 1891 in Haydock. Like you I am not sure if there is a connection.

Not found at all unless she is "Mart" in the entry below. This is not impossible, there is a James McMurray living in the same village, also a farmer, and he has a two-week old baby - I've seen the younger children being sent off to relatives at times like this. Unfortunately the 1841 Census did not record relationships.

Source - Personal communication, 2010-10-18 via ancestry.co.uk:

Hi Michael,
The Jane married to George was Jane Thornborn b 1774. Thornborn is a fairly common name in Midlothian, Scotland, and George was a sargeant in the 4th Queen's Own Hussars which was periodically stationed in Scotland during the latter part of the eighteenth century. Unfortunately, I have been unable to narrow down the locale for the regiment at the beginning of the nineteenth century, but am continuing to pursue it. Anyway George left the regiment in 1804.

The fact that both George and RObert lived in Startforth, and that both were militia members, plus the relative ages of the two does suggest a connection, but so far there is no direct evidence. A couple of us are continuing to pursue it.
Regards,
Tim Peake

However, 1841 Census suggests George's wife is called Jane and another researcher believes this to be Jane Thornborn, born in Scotland. See George Hunton for more details.

Sproughton

The manor of Boss Hall, in Sproughton, was so called from Edward de Bordeshawe, who resided there in the time of Henry III., and in whose family it continued for some generations. It afterwards came into the family of Bull: the hall was built by Anthony Bull, portman of Ipswich, in the time of James I. Thomas, Insson, left three daughters; one married to Benjamin Cutler, of Sproughton; another, to Charles Vesey, of Hintlesham, Esq.; and the other, to Serjeant Major John Moodie, of Ipswich, in 1655. It afterwards passed into the Broke family, of Nacton; and was lately sold by them to the late Mr. Thomas Kersey, of Whitton; whose son now resides there.

In the 11th of King Henry VI., 1433, Sir William Drowries held one knight's fee in this parish; from whom it passed to Sir Thomas Sampson, of Playford, Knt.: this manor and advowson remains in the same house, as at the period Mr. Kirby's account was published, Frederick William, Marquess of Bristol, being the present lord and patron; having passed as the lordship of Playford.

The Chauntry1 afterwards came into the possession of Metcalfe Russel, Esq.; from whom it descended to Michael, son of Peter Collinson, Esq., the ingenious botanist, and long an eminent member of the Royal Society; the intimate friend of Franklin, Linnaeus, &c., and who held correspondence with eminent men in almost every nation of the world.

Mr. Collinson came into possession of the said property upon the death of the above named Metcalfe Russel, in 1785; and, like his father, was distinguished for his knowledge in natural history, and the attention lie gave to botanical subjects in particular. He died in 1705, in the 67th year of his age, and was buried in the chancel of this parish church. Charles Streynsham Collinson, Esq., his only son, who had been long on the civil service in India, succeeded; upon whose death, in 1831, this estate was purchased by Charles Spooner Lillingstone, Esq., who is the present proprietor.

by Charles-Streynsham Collinson, Esquire,
late of the Chantry in this parish, and alsp
of Hendon in the county of Middlesex;
who died the 11th August, 1795, aged 67 years.
He was distinguished for his knowledge of Natural History,

From his generally wel-informed mind and polished manners,
his company was much esteemed by persons of the first eminence;
and he endeared himself to his more intimate connexions

The enjoyment of the latter part of his life was greatly interrupted
by a series of painful disorders, which he sustained
with examplary resignation and fortitude."

"PRIVATE OWNERS

The following is very much a listing based on work-in-progress, now made much more difficult since I retired from London University. Since it will take longer than I imagined to complete my researches on private collections identified before 1850 it seemed appropriate to offer what evidence I have collected to date, even in its necessarily unfinished state. It is based on A.N.L.Munby's annotated copy of the 1915 British Museum catalogue of auction sales; wills and inventories notified to me by scholars working in the field (notably Elizabeth Leedham-Green); bookplate evidence (I have still to complete checking the immense Franks catalogue); returns from libraries that have provenance indexes (a large number still to check); and a multitude of other sources. It will be found that auction sale evidence frequently duplicates names listed in the Country House Database. I trust that any users who discover errors and/or omissions will be kind enough to notify them to me. The task of identifying private owners of books is an endless one, and every new source checked unfailingly yields a modest harvest of new collectors."
