I don't know if this is the Eliza Stutchbury I am researching. She was born in Middlesex, London. She married a George Thomsett a Mariner. She had 4 children, three girls and one boy. Please get in touch if you think it is.
---------
Many thanks for the information you have given me. Some I didn't know about, namely Eliza Stutchbury's parents.
Eliza and George's daughter Eliza Marion was my great grandmother. Poor Eliza seems to have had a pretty rotten life. She was born on the 14th June 1846 at no. 24 Turner Street, Mile End Old Town, Middlesex (London). Eliza her mother died 1860. Eliza Marion married on 17th July 1865 Samuel Tate. She was a minor with consent. It says on her marriage certificate that her father was deceased, but he obviously wasn't. I couldn't find him on the 1861 census, obviously now because his name was spelt differently, so that was a help.
They had 6 children and on the 1891 census-Christopher J Tate (23) Clara Tate (16) Eliza M. Tate (20) George E. Tate (18) Jessie M. Tate (9) and William H Tate (12).
By the time of this census, my great grandfather had left Eliza. I cannot find him on any census at this time. However, he is on the 1901 census, living in lodgings and Eliza Marion is living in St Mary's Islington Workhouse where she died of a stroke in 1906.
My grandfather was William H. Tate. He married an Alice Morrell and they had four sons. My father being one of them.
Samuel Tate invented an adding machine which was on show many years ago in the science museum. But where he was between 1881 and 1891 I do not know.
Samuel Tate's background is also a mystery. He was born in Tipton, Staffordshire in 1840, but once again I cannot find him on any census. I know his father was called John and he was a labourer. But that is all. Very frustrating.
Thank you once again for the information, and I will get in touch with Geoff Stutchbury.
Regards, Helen.
