Michael, If I were more computer lit. I wouldn't have lost the message I was just writing to you Thank you for your reply. This is really interesting. I have only just started my tree so it only goes back as far as my grandparents. I can tell you that Victor Walter married Amy Elizabeth Hayes on 27.06.1914 at the Church of The Ascension, Balham, SW London. Amy was born on 13.05.1893 in Bromley, Kent. She died on 24.06.1974 in Staines, Middx. Victor was a Warehouseman when he married, living at 2, Caistor Rd, Balham, SW London. As far as I remember he died circa 1956 in Stains,but I will eventually confirm this. They had three children, the youngest being my mother, Janet, born on 06.02.1924 in Leek Staffordshire. She died on 06.03.2003 in Lewisham. This information comes from marriage and death certs that I have. There was a brother, Victor, now deceased but I don't as yet have details. There is a sister still living and I'm going to try to contact her for information. Time to spend on this is limited for me at present but I can't wait to 'get going' Regards, Christine

Hello again Michael
Have just found details about the other child of Victor and Amy. My aunt's name was Gladys Amy and she was born 13/05/1920 inLeek, Staffordshire. She was married to Victor Lort and they had three children. Thier son died in adulthood but I can't remember when. There were two daughters.
Gladys died in March 2004 and her death was registered in Wrekin, which I imagine to be in the Midlands.

Christine

Hello again Michael

Have found details about the other child of Victor and Amy. My aunt''s name was Gladys Amy and she was born 13/05/1920 in Leek, Staffordshire. She was married to Victor Lort in 1945, registered in 2nd quarter, Surrey NW. They had three children. Thier son Graham, born 26.02.1948 died in Feb 1990. There were two daughters but I haven''t got much info about them yet
Gladys died in March 2004 and her death was registered in Wrekin, which I imagine to be in the Midlands.

My Grandfather, Victor Walter Stutchbury died in 1958 and his death was registered in the 4th quarter. He died in Staines, Middlesex.

His son, Victor Albert, died in July 1984, registration district, Walsall. His date of birth was 28/04/1917.

Individual Notes

Note for:   Mary Anderson,   ABT 1778 -          Index

Individual Note:
     Mary Anderson is the father of Richard Cumming and her father is John Anderson a weaver of Swinton, Berwickshire:

November 14th. 1813: "Richard Cumming. Then was baptized Richard, illegitimate son of Mary Anderson, daughter of John Anderson, deceased, late weaver in Swinton (born 29th May last) ".

That much is certain, the rest is conjectural. There are at least three local matches for a Mary Anderson born of John Anderson - if any one is correct, then she was born around 1775 or 1778 in Swinton itself or nearby Edrom. Interestingly, one of the Swinton possibilities has a mother: Helen Cumming(s).

As son Richard Cumming was allowed by the Kirk to be baptised as such, it is probable that she did actually marry a Cumming. Richard is an very rare name in Scotland, Cumming and variants as a surname is as rare as hen's teeth in Berwickshire. Both may be clues, but so far no joy.

Another possibility to explore is that there is a Mary Anderson, daughter of John Anderson and Helen Cumming(s)

================
Source: Gerry Field, descended from William Cummings, son of Richard, son of Richard:

"I have found out that Richard Cummings (the elder) mother was called Mary Anderson, but have not got any further back than that. He appears to have been born out of wedlock so far as we can tell, but presumably his parents subsequently married because he bears the surname Cummings."

"The researcher I employed looked at the Swinton Old Parish Records and found the following:

November 14th. 1813: "Richard Cumming. Then was baptized Richard, illegitimate son of Mary Anderson, daughter of John Anderson, deceased, late weaver in Swinton (born 29th May last) ".

Apparently, the interval between the birth and the baptism was so that the parents could be admonished before the Kirk Session He had a look i n the Kirk Session records in Edinburgh, but could not find anything more."

Individual Notes

Note for:   Unknown Cumming,    -          Index

Individual Note:
     The mystery man.

So far, all we know is that Mary Anderson has a son, born as Richard Anderson in 1813 in the parish of Swinton and Simprin, Berwickshire, Scotland, close to the English border. Several months later, he is christened as Richard Cumming. Was he born out of wedlock? Was he born in an irregular border "Gretna Green" type marriage? (Coldstream, another Gretna Green, is only a few miles away). Who the father is, don't know. Is there a likely marriage record for Mary Anderson, no. What happened to him and Mary, don't know - though as son Richard is married in Simprin and his son, also called Richard is christened there, it would appear thye hung around the area. Yes, there are a few Cumming in the area but they move around. Also to complicate things, there are a lot of people with the surname "Common" in a 35 knm corridor along the north of the River Tweed stretching from Bedrule and Jedburgh in the west to Simprin in the east, who would appear to change their name to things like Cummins during the 19th Century.

==============
Here's a possible but highly, highly tenuous scenario.

Our mystery man is born in the Swinton & Simprin area, pehaps in one of the neighbouring Berwick parishes, Duns, Edrom, Eccles, Fogo, Whitsome & Hutton, Ladykirk or even Coldstream. He is either a Common or a Cumming. He gets a local girl pregnant and/or enters a questionable border marriage with her. Son Richard gets born and they are hauled before the Kirk for admonishment and it is months before son can be christened. They name him Richard; because of the whiff of scandal, Richard is not the father's name. They settle in the area. Richard grews up, becomes a labourer, marries, has a son but leaves the area for Kirkcubrightshire - hence claims that son Richard is a "Castle Douglas man". Richard the older, and possibly son, learn the ship-building trade and move up the social tree. Later they move to Bishopwearmouth near Sunderland to join the big time of iron ship building and later still to Thornaby for the River Tees yards.

==============
Unlikely match, mother's name appears to be clearly MARY Anderson. Interesting coincidence though that the surnames are identical.
The only record I found at the Scottish Registry office on-line records of a Cumming marrying a female Anderson 1812-1816 is David Cumming = Jean Anderson, 18 MAY 1812, Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland. An IGI record probably of the same marriage (but in 1811) shows them both being from Dunfermline, he born 1786, she born 1790.

If, and a very tenuous IF, the parents of Richard Cumming are David Cumming/Cummin and Jean Anderson of Dunfermline, then here are some possible matches for David:

David Cummin, b. 1788, Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland, no other info.

Although a Thomas and Elizabeth appear in the 1841 census, it is clear from the 1851 census that they come from elsewhere. It is possible that Elizabeth died and her husband remarried Isabella Bruce as per Sheila Sneddon, but then the birth dates do not match ... unless one is a baptism and one a birth.
