Individual Note: My grandfather John Collinson was born 6th February, 1892 in Shiremoor, Northumberland, UK - a tiny village probably growing fast because of nearby coal mine(s). His Dad was a coal miner and so may have worked at the nearby Backworth Colliery. Later the family moved to Wallsend, where he appears to have become a boilermakers apprentice for five years.
He then emigrated to Australia, possibly via South Africa, and fought in the ANZAC infantry (Australian Imperial Forces 25th Battalion, D Company) at Galipoli (hospitalized with Jaundice) and on the Western Front where he was severally injured twice. The second time he was invalided out of the Army in England, where he met and married Pierina Elena Corte, probably in South London area.
On doctor's advice he took up singing to strengthen his lungs. Trained, apparently as a protege of conductor Sir Henry Wood, and became a fairly successful Tenor, singing on the early BBC. He appears to have toured the USA and been the first person to have recorded "Waltzing Matilda", an unnoffical Australian anthem - two 78 record copies by John Collinson are held by the Australian National Sound and Screen Archives. During the early part of his marriage he split with Sir Thomas, who wanted him to sing in the German Lieder style to go and study at the ?Belle Artes?, Milano in the Belle Canto style.
Before the Second World War (1938?) he deserted his family and returned to Australia, never seeing them again. What he did there is still a mystery. He reappears in the Broome electoral register and phone book from 1965.
Died in Broome, Western Australia, Australia in 1973.
His partner ?Ruby Selena Kingsley? apparently died shortly before or after.
Now here is a more detailed biography, followed by research source information.

Worked in Newcastle shipyard(s) including the Mauratania liner. Was probably a Riveter's mate. Note: In his 1915 army enlistment papers, he states his trade as "boilermaker" and had served 5 years apprenticeship at "Wigham & Richardson" (Swan Hunter & Wigham Richardson).
Source - John Dunn Collinson, son:
"At some stage he went adventuring with his friend Harry Scott to Australia and was there at the outbreak of the 1914 war.
Emigrated to Australia. When in Australia, joined Australian Army and went with ANZAC forces to Galilipoli. Was shot in both arms and invalided out. Got an Australian pension which went to his wife Gar when he died. He was also gassed [though his Division's history does not support this] which affected his lungs so was encouraged to sing."
Source - Pierina Elena Corte, wife:
Trained to be an Opera Singer and was a protege of ?Sir Thomas Beecham? before disagreeing on the singing style he should pursue and went to train further in Milan.
Source - Personal War Record (hard to read) in Australian Archives and other general First World War documentary sources:
John Collinson enlisted 10th February 1915, Brisbane in the Australian Imperial Forces 25th Battalion and was "discharged" 17th December 1917 due to injuries rendering him permanently unfit for service. He served throughout in the same Battalion, enlisting and embarking in Queensland and served with it in Gallipoli and the Western Front. The battalion sailed from Brisbane 29th June, 1915, berthed for a few days in Sydney leaving on the 7th July and arriving in Suez 4th August 1915 for training and then landed at Gallipoli on 11 September 1915. The whole expeditionary force was evacuated by mid-January 1916 and John Collinson went on to fight on the Western Front and was wounded severely twice. The first appears to have been a gunshot wound on the 14th April 1916 and the second, just a few days of rejoining his unit were severe fractures of both arms on or around 14th November 1916. He never recovered fitness to fight again and was discharged from service in England after a year in hospital in December 1917.
Unfit to return to manual work, he stayed in England and took up singing as a career as a tenor. He sang on the BBC in the 1930's.
He married Pierina Elena Corte, met by virtue of a forces hospital visiting scheme, in 1920 in Paris.
Married Pierina Elena Corte and had two children, John Dunn and Peter Michael.
In 1927 he recorded "Waltzing Matilda", the first recording ever. A copy is in the Australian National Screen and Sound Archives.
Near the outbreak of the Second World War, probably 1938, he left Britain and lived in Australia for the rest of his life. He had separated from his wife Pierina many years before when his son John was about 3 years old. Son John was told be a close family friend that he had died and believed that for many years.
Returned to Australia with a nurse, Selena Kingsley, leaving his family in the UK and never seeing them again. Margaret Christine Collinson says she thinks that this was in August or September 1938. Moved around. Died in Broome, Western Australia. He left a number of Australian shares in a trust fund administered by the Public Trust Office in Perth. The dividend income was to go to his sons John and Peter while they were alive and then the principal to their children.
Research into Western Australa telephone directories and electoral rolls indicates that he moved to Broome in 1964 or 1965 as a pensioner - he would have been 72. There is no sign in the same electoral area of any Ruby Selena Kingsley or indeed any Kingsly or Kingsley. She may of course, never have taken Australian citizenship.

Family story: "From Cork" Not borne out by 1901 census.
The most definite data I have to date is her marriage certificate to Ernest Corte, 17th November 1897 at The Registry Office, Toxteth Park, Liverpool. Her father is shown as Edward Flinn, with occupation of "Cart Driver" or "Cab Driver". She is aged 21 so would have to have been born some time 18th November 1875 to 17th November 1876. In the 1901 census she is 24 [i.e. born Apr 1876 - Mar 1877]. Taking the two together, if true, she was born between Apr - 17 Nov 1876. BUT in the 1911 Census, she is shown as 33, [i.e. born Apr 1875 - Mar 1876], which would make her born Nov 1875 - Mar 1876.
I've recorded a birth date of 22 Nov 1876, but checking records, I have no source for that and cannot remember why.
In WWI, her husband show her as Ellen Mary Corte nee Flinn, so Flinn with an "i" seems consistant. Just possibly she was born as Mary Ellen Flinn and that is why I cannot find her birth index or census record. She is indeed referred to as Mary Ellen Corte in the 1911 Census.
There's just no obvious Census for Ellen Flinn or Flynn living with Edward or indeed either of them separately. The most promising lead so far is an 1891 14-year old Ellen Flynn [sic] born Liverpool at Industrial School, Formby Lancashire. She is amongst a whole list of 11 to 15 year-old "scholars". This would make sense if the family were not exactly, er, together. "Industrial Schools" evolved as a place to put difficult children under section 16 of the Industrial Schools Act and the Elementary Education Act of 1876.
If she was living with her father in 1881, the most likely match is a Mary Ellen Flinn b c1878 in Manchester and living there. But her father is Copper Roller Polisher, so I think it unlikely that he would be cart driver later.
There are several Mary Flynn or Flinn, born Lancashire in the 1881 England Census that are not living with father but no obvious match. There are no simlar Ellens.

This could be ST GEORGE’S INDUSTRIAL SCHOOLS FOR ROMAN CATHOLIC GIRLS, FAIRFIELD, LONDON ROAD, FRESHFIELD, FORMBY, though the info found suggests it ceased in 1878.
These appear to have been a fore-runner of British Reformatory schools
http://www.missing-ancestors.com/truant_schools%20brief%20description%20info.htm
TRUANT SCHOOLS
The objective of the School Boards was, perhaps inevitably, school attendance, and in the enforcement of this the Industrial School were found useful in the last resort. Between 1870 and 1876 a number of truants were sent to Industrial Schools under section 16 of the Industrial Schools Act, the parents pleading in self-defence that the children were beyond their control. To send children to a residential school from which they could not be licensed out before 18 months had elapsed, and where they would probably be retained till close on 16 years of age, appeared to be a very drastic and expensive remedy for mere non-attendance. The Elementary Education Act of 1876 provided, therefore, that a child sent to an Industrial School at the instance of a local education authority could be licensed-out after one month conditional on attending an Elementary School, and within two years some of the more enterprising School Boards had established Industrial Schools of their own to give effect to the net provision. These special Industrial Schools became known as Truant Industrial Schools, or Truant Schools. Two such schools (Upton House, London and Hightown, Liverpool) were opened in 1878 and one (Sheffield) in 1879. By the end of 1893, 15 Truant Schools in all were in operation in England and Wales and for a number of years the total number of boys in the schools averaged about 1,220, with between 4,000 and 5,000 on Licence.
At first the Truant Schools were not pleasant places. They smacked of the prison rather than of the school; provision for solitary confinement was more evident that that for instruction, and it is some consolation to think that the schools were never used for girls. The appointment of officers who had had experience in Industrial Schools, however, gradually let to the adoption of more enlightened methods, and during recent years less regard has been paid to mere paper results and more to the quality for the successes, with the result that even the formed showed an improvement, and such Truant Schools as Upton House and Highbury in London and the Midlands School at Lichfield, succeeded in accomplishing in the course of a few months and at the latest by the time the boy was 14 years of age, everything that could be desired in the way of giving him such a start in life as should ensure his ultimate success, provided always that the home surrounds were not too unfavourable. But just as the schools appeared to have solved the problem the number of boys committed to them began from various causes to decline, till at times the number in the schools fell below 1,000, and though, mainly through the opening of a school in Scotland, the total at the end of 1906 had risen to 1,232 the number of boys on licence is only about one half of what it formerly was, and many of the English Schools are far from being full.
The title Truant School is becoming more and more a misnomer, and it may be hoped that it will disappear, giving place to the only legal title Industrial School; but at the same time it is also to be hoped that the number of schools which can claim to be short term Industrial Schools will not diminish but steadily increase.
The most recently established Truant School, and the only on every opened in Scotland is that of the Glasgow School Board at Shettleston, a fine school and in many respects worthy of the second city in the Empire. But it is maintained at great expense to the School Board, and there is danger of its being stinted in certain important particulars, notably the provision for expert schoolroom instruction. The Shettleston School, however, will bear favourable comparison with most of the English schools of the same class and may indeed be said to have begun where several of them ended. Not its least claim to importance is that it represents the first real instance of a Scottish School Board identifying itself with the Industrial School system, and before long valuable results may possibly accrue from the excellent example of Glasgow.
All the Truant Schools are owned and managed by local Education Authorities either separately or, as in the cases of the North London, the Holme Court, Isleworth and the Midlands, Lichfield, by a combination of two or three Education Authorities acting in partnership for the purpose.

From the date of her first born, the reason for the marriage is obvious.
If she was 21, then she would be born 18 Nov 1875 - 17 Nov 1876. Combining this with her 1901 census age (if true) then she would be born Apr 1976 - 17 Nov 1876.

Gar was the daughter of Ernesto Corte and Elena Flynn or O'Flynn who apparently came from Cork and lived in Liverpool. At one point they had a post office in York Road, Stockwell.
Became a naturalised British citizen in 1910 as Ernest J Corte.
Ernesto was apparently "in the restaurant business" and "did well". He separated from Elena and went off with another "up market" woman, ?Celesta?, and probably settled in Nice.

Holborn is right in the heart of London on the east side just north of the Thames River and bordering Bloomsbury, Strand, Covent Garden and the Law Courts.
There is no street name "Denmark Place" in the modern London A-Z atlas and no Denmark-something in Holborn.

WR/279158 - Sapper E.J. Corte, R.E. (T.B.),
Reference your letter TB4/JF.350/20 dated 15.1.20 which was received at ths Office this morning, having been set to EGYPT in error.
I am unable to let you have the exact dae on which the above returned to TARANTO but from correspondence in my possession it would appear that Corte left ARQUATA on 13.8.19 and would therefore have arrived at TARANTO on about 15th August.
In view of the fact that the above man's Unit has now been disbanded, I will make the necessary correction in my next Part II Orders and show this man as having returned to TARANTO on 15.8.1919
