Individual Note: Existence interpolated from his spouse's married name in 1861 - Census. He appears to have died June 1854 - Apr 1861. No evidence yet as to his given name or family. 1851 Census should resolve it, IF he was married by then.
Update Feb 2010: I have now found a potential FreeBMD marriage in 1853 of a Joseph Lee to an Ann Watson. Is so, there may also be a match to Gene Reunited Hilary Anderson tree: Joseph Lee b. 1826 Newbiggin. His parents are Isaac Lee b c1791 and Elizabeth unknown b c1791 both born east common newbiggin. http://www.genesreunited.com/tree/?member_key=10488942

His eldest known child was born Apr 1855 - Mar 1856, so he was probably alive until June 1854 and he was dead by Apr 1861. Perhaps one of these is him:

Subject: Elizabeth Barker nee Lee
Dear Michael, A hint on Ancestry brought me to notice your good work on your family tree and the Collinsons. You will hopefully see that our Elizabeth is the greatgrandma to my husband, John Barker. Elizabeth married John Barker in 1874 and had seven children, Joseph Sidney being my husbands grandad. I hope we are on the right Elizabeth as otherwise I won't have a husband. Regards, Janet Barker

Gaunless Lead Mill and brickworks. The manager's house is still extant (1980s). It is possible that this is where Joseph Collinson lived, though an "overman" is would normally be lower than manager. A on-exhaustive search of the census pages though revealed no other lead works related dwellings/managerial occupation.
Gaunless Smelt Mill. [MJC: Not sure if this = Gaunless Lead Mill and brickworks, Joseph's son becomes a "brick & tile manufactuer" later]. The main chimney is still extant (1980s).
