Individual Note: With a name like Gibson Collinson and a Lead Miner occupation (1880 census) he surely must be a Middleton In Teesdale-area Collinson?? Note Dubuque County is where Joseph Collinson / Margaret Tarn headed after emigrating, surely no coincidence?

Marriage Book A
Dubuque County, IA
This is a transcription of Marriage Book A, located at the Dubuque County Court House. It was done in early October 2001 by Tom Schlarman. The transcription was then proofed by Joan Tallman in November 2001. This was transcribed as seen and therefore is subject to error. If you feel that an entry is in error, you are invited to check the transcription yourself. If you do find an error, please let Tom know and we'll recheck the transcription for that entry.
It should be noted that there are two parts to Marriage Book A. The Licenses and the Returns. This is a transcription of only the first part of the book (the Licenses). We are working on a transcription of the returns. We found that the returns can provide additional information such as their age at the time of marriage, the actual marriage date and additional comments (such as a father's name if the bride or groom was underage). The Marriage Book A Returns will be posted at a later date.
It should also be noted that the License Date is not actually the day they were married on. It's just the day they applied for their marriage license. Very often they were also married on that day, but that is not always the case. The usual sequence of events were: 1) The couple applied for a Marriage License, 2) The couple were married, 3) The Return was sent back to the court house or delivered by the religious person who performed the ceremony.

Hello I have a Maria Collinson born Stanhope c1845 in my tree, she married my g.fathers great uncle John Armstrong in the 1860's and therfore all her (many) offspring are Armstrongs - is this a relation? regards Yvonne.
Have allowed access to the tree - Maria is on my mothers side, just follow through her father Fred Armstrong and onto his grandfather Thomas Armstrong b1840 - Marias husband John was his brother. I will add her details in sometime if you don't mind. My Grandfather too was a lead miner as were many of his relatives, although when the mines closed his grandfather became a pedler and eventually bought a shop in St Johns Chapel and traded as a draper/general store. My grandfather continued to follow the mines up through Weardale and on into Northumberland but after the first world war he worked above ground on farms in and around Allendale/Haydon bridge/langley. Last weekend we drove through Weardale through to Langley, you wouldn't think today they had even had mines there
regards Yvonne

[MJC note: I suspect that the (Joe Collinson?) reported 11 May 1843 death may correspond to the Jane memorial below and have added Stanhope to the entry. This would make her DOB about 1784. cannot find her in the 1841 England Census though - I'd expect her to be with one of the children.]

The lists of Monumental Inscriptions on these pages have been kindly provided by the Weardale Field Study Society and are part of an ongoing project to transcribe all Monumental Inscriptions in Weardale and make them freely available to the public. The North Pennine Ancestors web site is grateful for the opportunity to assist with this project by publishing these lists.
The task of transcribing and the subsequent indexing of Monumental Inscriptions at Eastgate, Rookhope & Stanhope was carried out during 2005. This was followed in 2006 by Monumental Inscriptions in the Cowshill area. The work was made possible by a grant from the Countryside Agency for Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
With thanks to Margaret Manchester, members of the Weardale Field Study Society and other volunteers for the hard work put into this project.

Subject: [Teesdale District] TARN, TALLENTIRE and HEWARD families in Upper Teesdale
Date: Tue, 17 Feb 2004 12:10:14 +0000
The TARN and HEWARD families appear to have lived on the same farm -
Kirkhouse Fold, near Langdon Beck - for around 300 years
William TARN was born 10 Dec 1656 and baptized at St Mary's,
Middleton-in-Teesdale, on 28 Dec 1656.
His grandson Timothy TARN married Jane TALLENTIRE 16 Oct 1760.
His g-g-granddaughter Jane TARN married John HEWARD 25 Sep 1839 and
since she was an only child, the tenancy passed into the hands of the
HEWARD family, who continued to farm at Kirkhouse Fold until after
the war.
Does anyone else on the list have an interest in these families?
Happy to share any information.
Melvyn
