Name Note: Source:    Birth Certificate of son John Alexander Cummings.

Individual Note:
Jane Lauder is the first wife of my (Michael John Collinson) great grandfather Richard Cummings. They married Feb 7th 1862 at the Parish Church of Stephen, South Shields in the County of Durham.

All we know about Jane Lauder, the first wife of Richard Cummings, for sure is from the 1871, 1881 and 1891 England Census: she was born in 1841 or 1842 in Scotland and that from her marriage certificate her maiden name was Lauder and father was John Lauder, a "moulder". Also, there is supposed to be a family connection between her and Richard's second wife. She very likely died between April and June 1891 in Thornaby, North Yorkshire.

Individual Note:
James Robert Denholm Cummings is the son of Richard Cummings and his first wife Jane Lauder. The "Denholm" comes from his grandmother.

James was born in 1878 and appears in the 1881 and 1891 England Census living with his parents.

In 1901 he was living with his married sister Jane, he was an "Angle Smith" at a shipyard.

In 1910, he married Elizabeth Annie Welsh in the Middlesbourgh area. Next year there are two Cummings births, one "Robert D[enholm]", is found in the 1911 Census.

In 1911 he was living in Thornaby with his wife and an "Angle Iron Smith".

After the 1911 census, the trail is lost. Was he called up in First World War? DId he survive it? The evidence is not clear.

A cartoonist for ?Daily Mail? Well known. - Rita, May 2007 [There is indeed a famous "Cummings" cartoonist, but is: Arthur Stuart Michael Cummings MBE (born Leeds, Yorkshire, 1 June 1919, died London, 9 October 1997) was a British newspaper cartoonist. He was known as Michael Cummings and signed his work simply Cummings. His father was A.J. Cummings, a political columnist of the period who would achieve Fleet Street fame as the political editor of the old News Chronicle. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/obituaries/obituary-michael-cummings-1235266.html Mother nee Suddards) - MJC]

One other curiosity, the first family of Richard Cummings were Jane, John, James R and David. James R., John, and Jane just happen to appear as 3 out of 4 Cummings listed in:

Marriages from the Registers of South Shields St Michael (1900-1908) http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/Transcriptions/DUR/MSSHSM1900.html Last updated: 17th October 1996 - Brian Pears
This listing is produced from an index that was originally prepared by Bill Rounce and entered onto computer by George Bell. This index is one of a number kindly made available to GENUKI by George Bell from his large collection of Northumberland and Durham indexes.

1 Jan 1900 Ernest Cummings = Ethel French
1 Jan 1901 James R. Cummings = Mary Ann Straker
5 Oct 1901 John Cummings = Sarah Vasey
7 Aug 1905 George Dickinson = Jane Cummings

Note that South Shields is very close, to the north, of Sunderland where they were born.

From the 1881 Census, Mary Straker is a popular name in Northumberland. There are a number about the right age born in South Shields:

Mary E. STRAKER - 1881 British Census / Durham
Daur Gender: Female Birth: <1869> Cockerton
Mary A. STRAKER - 1881 British Census / Durham
Serv Gender: Female Birth: <1860> Witton Gilbert, Durham, England
Mary A. HUGHES (STRAKER) - 1881 British Census / Durham
Step Daur Gender: Female Birth: <1866> Darlington, Durham, England
Mary E. STRAKER - 1881 British Census / Durham
Daur Gender: Female Birth: <1867> So Shields, Durham, England
Mary E. STRAKER - 1881 British Census / Northumberland
Daur Gender: Female Birth: <1870> So Shields, Durham, England
Mary A. STRAKER - 1881 British Census / Surrey
Dau Gender: Female Birth: <1868> S Shields, Durham, England
Mary J. STRAKER - 1881 British Census / Durham
Servt Gender: Female Birth: <1853> So Shields, Durham, England

TO DO: Check for Mary Cummings in 1901 Census and then see if there is a James Cummings living there too - check his age and POB.

Individual Note:
     My (Michael Collinson) ggg grandmother.

My history of her is still a bit hazy, particularly her parentage:

Born 1818 Swinton & Simprin, Berwickshire, Scotland according to descendent Gerry Field, but other records indicate adjacent parish of Edrom. Also census ages do not jive, giving approx year of birth as 1815 or 1816 (1841 Scotland Census) and 1811 or 1812 (1871 England Census)

Married 1839 in Swinton & Simprin.

Richard Cumming 25 Agricultural Labourer, Jane Cumming 25 [sic], Richard Cumming 1 appear in the 1841 Census in the village Swinton.

Had at least 5 children.

Died in 1878 in the Sunderland area where her husband worked as an "Iron ship builder".
