Individual Note:
James Cummings was the brother of my [Michael John Collinson] great grandfather Richard Cummings. There is no family record or folk memory of his existance so everthing is surmised from documentary record. He was an Iron Shipwright like his father and brother and seems to have basically made the same migration southward over the years though spending longer in the Sunderland area than his brother.

James Cummings first appears in the record in the 1851 England Census, born in Berwickshire, in what is almost certainly the village of Hume. His older brother Richard was born in Swinton, Berwickshire and his immediate younger sister in Gordon, Berwickshire

In 1861 he was still living with his parents, born Scotland and an Iron Shipwright. , so he was probably born in one of these or nearby village.

In 1871 has married "Mary J" (born North Shields), moving like his father and brother Richard down the coast to Bishop Wearmouth. However in or before 1891 he and his family abruptly dissapper, have they emigrated?? Only his son Thomas Hughes Cummings appears in the 1891 and 1901 Census. Daughter Mary Anderson Cummings marries and appears in 1891 but not 1901. Recently [Feb 2008] I've just found out that his daughter Catherine definitely stayed in the country - she married an Arthur Spedding.

Who is the "Mary J" that he married? The front runner at the moment is Mary Jeffries McLeod in 1865. If so, she died in 1881, just after the census (Cummings, Mary Jeffries age 40 in BMD). That might explain her husband's possible late move from the Sunderland area to the Stockton area. Another faint possiblity is that the J is mistranscribed and she is a Mary Ann Anderson.

Not confirmed, but I now think he most likely died in 1891 in the Stockton area just before the 1891 census. There is a BMD registration of such a James Cummings death and his daughter Catherine was living in that area when she married in 1900.

Living with family in Roxburghshire and born in Berwickshire in what looks like the village of Hume:

"STITCHEL and HUME, an united parish in the district of the Merse, on the mutual border of Roxburghshire and Berwickshire. Stitchel is in Roxburghshire, and Hume is in Berwickshire; they were united in 1640; and each contains a village of its own name. The united parish is bounded by Gordon, Greenlaw, Eccles, Ednam, Nenthorn, and Earlston. Its length from north to south is between 5 and 6 miles; and its breadth is between 3 and 4 miles." from the Imperial Gazetteer of Scotland, edited by John Marius Wilson, 1868

Since his daughter Catherine got married in Stockton in 1900, it seems circumstantially likely that James also made the "Cummings migration" south like his brother Richard, and that that this is his death in 1891.
