Indefatigable Vanguard enthusiast Jonathan Saunders has provided this database of those men lost when the battleship sank in 1917. He has combed through the 1917 Imperial Wargraves Commission registers for Chatham and Portsmouth, as well as the current Commonwealth Wargraves Commission database to extract the data. Please contact Jon if you find any errors, or have any further information on the ship and her crew.
Just before midnight on Monday, 9 July, 1917, the St Vincent class battleship HMS Vanguard suddenly blew up, taking over 800 of her crew down with her. It was a magazine explosion in one of the two magazines which served the amidships turrets 'P' and 'Q'. A definitive reason for the cause of the cordite explosion has never been found.

Message on http://genforum.genealogy.com:
My father was George Hawkridge born in Snape,Yorkshire 1888, one of seven shildren of Samuel and Barbara Hawkridge.
Barbara was a Mcloud from Stornoway in the hebrides and worked as a ladies maid for the Milbank family where she met Samuel.Samuel was chief coachman for the Milbank family who had a large country home in Snape. I guess that he must be related to the other Yorkshire Hawkridges. Does anyone have any information?
