Note for: David Oliver Cummings, 1881 - 1904
Index
Occupation: Place: Ship Joiner
Individual Note: Almost certainly David Oliver Cummings, ship joiner, born 1881, died 1904 aged 23 and does not appear to have married.
Not mentioned by Florence Stutchbury or daughter Rosemary but listed in 1901 census as David O., 20-years old, single, a Ship Joiner working at a Shipyard and born in Durham, Sunderland. In 1891 he also appears to be David O but in 1881, he apears to be David B which could be David Bell. A birth match as David Oliver Cummings seems most likely though. There is a matching David Oliver Cummings death index record in 1904 in Stockton, which matches family movement.
Last traceable in 1901, he is single and working as a Ship Joiner. Unless the David Bell Cummings, he vanishes. No BMD trail, no 1911 census entry. Emigrated??
In 1910, a David Bell Cummings gets married in Chester le Street area, Co. Durham, which may or may not be him. In 1911 the David Bell is living in Houghton le Spring, Co. Durham and is a coal miner - an unlikely change of profession.

A David Cummings 6/3691 of "46, New Row, Oakenshaw nr. Willington" enlists 20th April 1915 in Bishop Aukland with address. He appears to have served a previous 4 months? in 1914. He is "posted" as private to the D Company, 6th Battalion, Durham L.I. (Light Infantry?) from 20.14.1915 to 7.5.1915. His next of kin is listed as "Jane Barker (mother)" of the same address, so not our man unless it is mother in law.

Individual Note: My (Michael John Collinson) great great grandmother if research is correcMy (Michael John Collinson) great great grandmother if research is correct.
Found in 1881 Census married to Joseph Collinson. 42, Born Ryton, Durham, England. So born around 1838.
Died in between July and September 1888 in or around Kenton. Husband Joseph remarried by 1901 Census.
Surname Craig according to Joe Collinson and that is borne out by an 1864 marriage index and his own assertion that they married at Gateshead Registry office in 1864.
What is somewhat uncertain is where she was before marriage and who her parents were. She does not appear in pre-1871 census data as born in Ryton. The most likely match is an Elizabeth Craig, 2 years-old who appears in the 1841 Census at Brickgarth in Co. Durham. Places of Birth are not recorded in this census, but she almost certainly appears again in the 1851 Census living with her uncle and is recorded as born in Crawcrook, Co. Durham - the same place she uses in 1871 and only 1 mile from Ryton. If this is true, then her parents are John Craig from Cumberland and Sarah Hogarth from Westmorland.
Ryton:
"Census populations for Ryton were:- in 1801, 432; in 1811, 462; in 1821, 445; in 1831, 590; in 1841, 677; in 1851, 739; in 1861, 1140; in 1871, 1939; in 1881, 3036; and in 1891, 3393."
Older note:
There is not a single Craig, born Ryton in the 1881 Census. There is however a large amount of Craig born Stanhope, Co. Durham. This is back in the Collinson "ancestral" area of upper Teesdale and Weardale. A random look at older Craig in the 1871 Census found a William Craig, Quarryman. Now, Elizabeth married a Quarryman, could this be a connection? Joseph Collinson and Elizabeth appear to have married in 1864. In 1871, Joseph was not in Kenton - where were they?

Re: Brickgarth
For anyone with access to a local library, there was a good article by
Michael Sill, called "Landownership and the landscape: a study of the
evolution of the colliery landscape of Hetton le Hole Co Durham" in the
Bulletin of Durham County Local History Society, no 23 (August 1979). Four
maps are given (as endpapers), one of which shows the original brickgarth in
some detail.
I quote: "The most extreme example of the effect of the antecedent field
pattern on the settlement plan is afforded by the unit of housing called
Brick Garth in the south of Hetton township. Here, in an elongated field of
8 3/4 acres with overall dimensions of 700 yards by 70 yards, owned by the
Hutchinson family and leased to the coal company, miners' cottages were built
rapidly after the opening of Hetton and Elemore collieries. By 1827 101
houses had been constructed on this plot, a figure which had been doubled by
the middle of the nineteenth cnetury. In order to maximise the number of
dwellings which could be fitted into this narrow field Brick Garth was
planned as a series of twenty two short rows aligned across the width of the
plot, with eleven headrows disposed along its long axis. Two short rows and
one headrow formed a three-sided unit of up to eighteen dwellings, in t
case of the complete examples facing on to a small court. In this way t
most efficient, if not humane, use of this awkwardly shaped parcel of land
for housing purposes was achieved.

Note: Crawcrook is a village 1km southwest of Ryton where Elizabeth [Craig?] is listed as born in other Census. It had a colliery there: Catherine Pit, Crawcrook and Claravale Colliery, Crawcrook 1893 - 1965
Ryton collieries: Folly Quarry (Sand) - dates unknown.
Emma Colliery 1845 - 1968. The Emma pit is about half-a-mile south west of Ryton village, and was sunk in 1843 - which makes it as close to Crawcrook as Ryton.
Addison Colliery opened 1865.
Towneley Colliery, Ryton group most opened 1843, but Towneley Main at nearby Stargate was opened in 1803 and had a big accident in 1826. Stargate however closed in 1834 as it did not recover from the explosion.

Theory:
Elizabeth Craig was born in Ryton but as there appears to be no one else, the family were coal miners following work around and moved to Northumberland - where Joseph met her. Check in 1871 census shows a Craig family in Kenton. Could Margaret be the mother? It is difficult to tell from the image with dau. Margaret is natural dau. or da. in law:

Individual Note: Joseph Collinson is my great great grandfather.
Appears to have been born in Kenton, a small village near Newcastle, Northumberland, UK (now a suburb of Gosforth) or at Gosforth just to the north of Kenton. His father was a coalminer and as a child (1841 and 1851 Census) he lived in Kenton.
Collinson family researcher Joe Collinson says that on 25 Jun 1864 he married an Elizabeth Craig. I've not corroborated this (FreeBMD has not indexed 1864 as of Sept 2005), though by the 1871 Census he is certainly living with his wife Elizabeth born c1838 in Ryton, Co. Durham. She died in 1888 having born him 8 children.
Joe Collinson also makes the interesting note, "Came to the USA in about 1865 but was horrified by the treatment of the Negro's on the Mississipi and thus, returned to England". An intriguing story of a man ahead of his times, but I don't yet know the basis.
Some of his children were born in Newcastle - in the 1871 Census, the family is living in Lea?g?es Lane, Newcastle, but by 1881 he is back in Kenton. His profession according to various census records was Quarryman and in 1891 "Mason".
In 1888 his wife Elizabeth died and he remarried sometime between 1881 and 1901 and can be found living in Benwell, (now a south-western suburb of Newcastle close to the Tyne), in 1901. His second wife was Margaret A. Graham. Margaret had already been married to and had 12 children. In 1901, two of them, Emily and Robert, were still living with them. Both later emigrated to the USA, though Robert returned.
In 1910, according to Ward's Directory he owned a quarry at Benwall Bank Top, West Road and lived nearby at 134 Strathmore Crescent, Newcastle. He was still the owner in 1916.
From a manual search of the St. Catherine's death index he almost certainly died in in 1920 at the age of 82.

Town: Newcastle upon Tyne

Kenton Notes:
Source - http://www.tomorrows-history.com/Collections/..%5CCommunityProjects%5CPA0100120001%5CKenton%20LHS.htm (KENTON LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY)
"Kenton was an Anglo-Saxon settlement which became a Norman manor then a large private estate, divided into east and west for much of its existence, and which then extended into what is now Blakelaw and Slatyford; it was finally sold off for building during the 20th. century. The village, part of Northumberland until 1935, has now all but disappeared; the old stone houses have been demolished, the industries quarrying, mining and farming - have vanished almost without trace and a few people remain with a real memory of what village life was like. Modern housing estates built from the 1930s are now what constitutes Kenton with employment provided by the local shops, the Newcastle-upon-Tyne City Council and community organisations like Barnados and CSV - most Kenton people now work away from where they live and workers in the area often commute in from elsewhere."

Individual Notes
Note for: Joseph Collinson, ABT 1869 - 1952
Index
Residence: Date: 1901
Place: 3 Comely Green Cres, Edinburgh Abbey, Midlothian, Scotland
Individual Note: Born in 1869 in Newcastle and was brought up by his parents in nearby Kenton. He appears in the 1881 census but has vanished in the 1891 and 1901 census.
I thought he must have died or emigrated. If the former, there is a possibility he got married and perhaps had two children Joseph and Edward - though the dates don't quite fit, he should be in the 1891 Census. If he emigrated, did he by any chance go to Canada? That would explain why nephew and niece went there later.
Joe Collnson on the other hand says he married twice and died in 1952, but without specifying any places. On this data, he is probably the Joseph Collinson that married Margaret Hart in late 1891 and could have died in Nottingham, UK in 1952

--> Very promising. If he died in 1993 his wife might not have remarried by 1901 Census, there is no likely Margaret Collinson. There is one Jane Collinson, 30, born Durham Ferryhill Village, of right age but living in Wolsingham, a town with a number of unrelated Collinson.
--> Margaret Hart is almost certainly Hart, Margaret J in the 1891 Census, daughter, 24, living Coxlodge, Gosforth, born Gosforth; a waitress and daughter of Ellen Hart, widow.
--> There are 308 Jane Robson in Northumberland in 1891 Census, so not checked.
