About Barbara Marshall
Allegedly Barbara married at age 19 and had 10 children, 7 of whom had offspring. At the time of her death, she had 145 children/grandchildren and great-grandchildren. When Caleb the elder`s will was proved in 1804, he left his property in England to his sons in Berwick. A dispute followed the will which lated for many years. Caleb had left property in Woolgate to his son Caleb which passed, after his death, to his widow Barbara. The ownership of the house in Woolgate was disputed by Caleb`s former creditors who claimed it was theirs. Barbara, a most formidable woman by all accounts, remained in occupation of the house until 1829 when a final legal decision against her by the local Land Court resulted in her eviction. The 18th house in Wooldate still has a fine appearance. The hearing was held on 22 April 1828 before William Weatherhead, the Mayor and Christopher Cookson, the Recorder. The record shows that James Bent and his wife Jane, together with James and Mary Patterson were seeking possession of `that back burgage tenement or dwelling house situate....on the north side of a street in Berwick....called Crossgate otherwise the Woolmarket.....now in the occupation of the said Barbara Buglass.` The jury reached a decision that `the complainants have a good right and title to the premises in question....therefore desire that possession be given.`

About Caleb Buglass
Caleb`s business is in decline, owing to the downturn in trade following immigration to the town, and foreign competition.. `To be sold at Berwick upon Tweed, A complete Set of Bookbinders Tools, etc. in good condition, viz. A standing Press, two cutting presses, ploughs and knives for ditto; a pair of pasteboard shears, several pairs of pressing and cutting boards for folios, 4tos, 8vos and 12 mos. Also letters for all the aforesaid sizes: with sundry flower and fillet rolls, stamps, polishers, etc. etc. etc. - Enquire of Mr Buglass, Bookseller in Berweick aforesaid. Also a large Bible Sign, cut in Wood and gilt, which cost 1¹ 10s.` Hannah French, one of the leading authorities on early American bookbinding, places CAleb among the finest craftsmen of his day. Caleb first demonstrated his interest in books and printing when, at the age of 15, he precociously subscribed to `A Thought on Creation` by Stephen Jackson of Berwick. This book is described as `a poem : touching some of the liberal sciences; with a reference to the usefulness of the art of printing.`
