Caleb Buglass
b. 1791 Berwick upon Tweed, Northumberland
d. 1868
m. Ann Cuthbert [?]
About Caleb Buglass
[missing from original] nd Militia, newly enrolled. His rank was Private. He then moved to Dundee from March 1808, where he remained throughout the rest of the musters. He was on furlough from 19th July to 12th August 1808.
He then became a Drummer on 25th September 1808. He was recruiting in Glasgow from October 1808 to February 1809, and was then on furlough from 6th to 16th March 1809.
On 25th March 1809 he reverted to the rank of Private and was again on furlough from 10th to 23rd December 1809, and spent part of this muster with the regimental band. From 9th January to 11th March 1810, Caleb was again on furlough, and again spent part of this muster with the band. He was discharged on 9th April 1810 `having found two substitutes`.
25th Foot, 2nd Battalion, 1808 - WO12/4229 Statement of the pay and daily allowances of the 2nd Bn, 25th Regt of Infantry from 26th December 1807 to 24th March 1808. 1 Coy, No.53 [entry number] Buglass, Caleb, 90 days pay at 1/- per day, ¹4 10s 2d issued, paid an additional 3s 3d for lodgings at an inn while on a march, plus 90 days in lieu of beer. Absent on 1st Muster having newly enrolled from Northumberland Militia. [see below]. Recruiting Account of the 2nd Bn 25th Regt of Infantry at Head Quarters from 25th Decemeber 1807 to 24th March 1808, both days inclusive. Payments made at Head Quarters to complete the Levy money of recruits enlisted by the different recruiting parties and finally approved: [In Columns] Name of Recruit:Caleb Buglass Date of enlistment:26th December 1807 Name of Officers commanding the parties by which enlisted and of the recruiting districts whre enlisted: Cornett Smyth extra recruiting oficer. Edinburgh district Volunteer Northumberland Militia. 3rd part of the bounty to the recruit, paid on final approval: ¹3 3s 0d. Paid to the party of person conducting the recruit to head quarters and allowance to the party on final approval: 5s 0d. In the pay account for the quarter ending 24 December, Caleb has been promoted to Drummer and from 21st November 1808 is recruiting at Glasgow. His pay has increased to 1s 13/4d per day. Caleb returns to the militia on 7th February 1809, still as a Drummer but is on furlough until 16th March and has not been present at any of the monthly musters (first two he was still in Glasgow). By the beginning of the quarter ended 24th June 1809, Caleb is back in the ranks and back on 1/- per day - probably as his stint as a recruiter was over. There is no other apparent reason. The next quarter he is still a private, and this trend seems to continue. [Next visit - check next volume WO12/4230]. Caleb joined the Loyal Berwick Volunteer Militia shortly after his father`s death. Unfortunately, there are no description of the recruits, although there would be no indication of his eventual looks as, at this time, he was only 12 or 13 years of age. For the first four years he was a drummer boy, but in 1807 he became a private. He may have joined up to ease the burden on his mother. He served until 17th November 1807 when he was transferred to the 25th Foot.

Dear Michael
de Wintons: they began as Wilkinses, a banking family from Brecon and in 1839 all branches upgraded to de Winton which they had ancestral delusions about. Walter married Julia Collinson 14.2.1831 so he was Wilkins then. He was MP for Radnorshire and finished his father's Maeswllch Castle, a great pile on the Wye, but died young (31) in 1840. Henry de Winton was his second cousin. His son Francis Walter became a Major-General (another one) and KCB [Burke's Landed Gentry]
I was wrong to ascribe nastiness to Walter; that was his son (Captain) Walter so I am afraid half a Collinson. Kilvert's Diaries (you know?) show him as a rude host with a leaning to drink: to guest "Thomas, you'll be sick .... Because you eat too much".... "No" said the guest meaningly "I never get drunk" [entry for 19.7.1871]; a wastrel: The cottagers say that these woods are to be felled to pay De Winton's gambling debts [entry of 3.2.1872]; and ultimately a shadow of himself: He looked fearfully ill and shrunken and feeble...he said..."I can't shoot and I can't fish and I can't do anything now [entry of 17.9.1874]. He died 24.5.1878 [Kilvert] aged 46.
There is one Kilvert reference to Thomasina (Collinson) de Winton trying to console a young mother dying of TB who said:"Mrs de Winton has been like a mother to me.{She said} Wouldn't I like to be with my dear sister again?"[entry of 9.6.1870]
A bit on General Collinson's career: 1838 2nd Lieut, 1841 1st Lieut, 1847 Captain, 1858 Battalion Major, 1860 Lieut-Colonel, 1865 Battalion Colonel; in 1847 he was in NZ during disturbances, and was at the repulse of 400 natives at Wanganui on 19 July [Army List] I am still delighted to know about his mapmaking; it shows his interests and leanings so much more than a list of his ranks can do.
I continue to study the tree and was particularly pleased to see that George Bland who married Sibyl Collinson was in charge of The College Durham; the family connection explains, probably, why Katherine Baker's younger (half) brother was a student there when he died in his teens.
So thank you again. I have a bit more on the vast Collinson/King family to pass on nd I think that will cover what I know that is useful.
Best wishes
Rosalind

Maesllwch Castle is situated half a mile to the north of Glasbury on Wye, in the old County of Radnorshire. The house originally belonged to the Vaughan family - Richard Haslam in the Powys edition of ‘The Buildings of Wales’ mentions a hall house belonging to William Vaughan, who died in 1582. On his death, the house passed out of the family, through a daughter, to a Charles Lloyd (died 1698). His daughter married Humphrey Howarth, who built a second house on the site in 1715. This house, known as Maeslough House, was a 2 storey, 5 bay house, with a hipped roof , in the Queen Anne style.
The Howarth family were bankrupted around 1750, and the estate was bought by the Clive family, who then sold it in 1772 to John Wilkins, banker & solicitor from Brecon on behalf of his son Walter, who had made his fortune in India.
His son, also Walter Wilkins, commissioned architect William Lugar to build a new, castellated, house on the site; it was moved a little further forward to enjoy a better view over the river Wye. Building continued until 1850. Probably 3 generations of Wilkins were involved in the planning of the castle. The ground plan was the same as that of Glanusk Park near Crickhowell. The exterior style ranged from 14th century to Perpendicular, with 6 dissimilar towers. The entrance hall was a glass roofed atrium; the interior was also an eclectic mix of styles: Norman, Regency and Gothic, and was completed around 1840. It is thought that Lugar also designed the lodge, which stands at the end of the drive, on the Glasbury to Clyro road.

Maesllwch Castle 3
The family
Origins and early years
The family claimed descent from a Norman lord, called de Wintona, whose lands were around Cowbridge. The surname became corrupted, over time, to Wilkins.
Walter Wilkins (1741 - 1828) was the second son of John Wilkins, banker & solicitor of The Priory, Brecon. He made his fortune in India and was first Governor of the province of Chittagong. He was the first of a line of elder sons called Walter who owned Maesllwch. He was MP for Radnor (1796 - 1828), also a JP & High Sheriff. As a Whig, Walter Wilkins held relatively liberal views, and did not take part in the Enclosure movement. Indeed, he signed an appeal against the Nantmel enclosures in 1814.
His son Walter (1777 - 1831), born 6 years after the purchase of Maesllwch, commissioned the architect Lugar, but died, relatively young, before the work was completed. His son Walter Wilkins MP (1809 - 1840) was the one who resumed, by Royal Licence, the ancient surname of de Winton, on 6 July 1839. In the same month, he joined a deputation to Lord Melbourne (the Prime Minister) against the eviction of squatters from land sold by the Crown to local landowners, carrying on his grandfather’s work of safeguarding the interests of the poorest members of society.

Thanks Michael.Henry Anthony was the illegitimate son of Walter Wilkins and is named on Henry's marriage certificate.Members of the Anthony family still live in Clyro and two of them are doing the tree. Elizabeth Anthony married David Galloway when she moved to Birmingham, Galloway being my mother's maiden name. Unfortunately we are unable to fiend Henry Anthony's mother's name. So perhaps you are right about the Wilkins family. I've opened up my tree so you can see where it all fits, but it maynot be of that much use to your family tree but still interesting.
