A sister of Ken Hawkins ( great grandchildren of Mary Ann Cole, Richard's sister), who lives in Surrey, has a painting by Richard Cole that was handed down in the family. The picture is of a sailing ship on a rough sea entitled ' Over the Bar next tide'. The notorious Bar is just off of Appledore at the entrance to the rivers Taw and Torridge estuary, and years ago was responsible for many shipping tragedies.
