Dear Michael
Thank you again very much for letting me look at your splendid tree. I am working my way through it and its notes. The admiral and the wives of rai;lway pioneersare new to me; and though I had come across Julia de Winton as an authoress I didn't know it was children's books or to support her family. The various census extracts are very useful as well. The least I can do is fill in the oddments I know that are extra.

Sources: if I put CR for civil registration and KB for my grandmother's "family book", a manuscript record of her relations begun, I would guess, in her teens and updated over the years.

Katherine Baker who married General Collinson was born 1822 (KB)

parents: Revd James Baker (1788-1855) [KB)]spiritual chancellor of diocese of Durham 1818-25, rector of Nuneham Courtenay Oxon 1825-55 [Alumni Oxonienses]
Catherine [so spelt on her memorial at Nuneham] Haggitt (1797-1826) [KB and memorial]

grandparents (this is relevant as will appear): Captain Benjamin Baker (1738-1820) 63rd Foot [KB/Army List]
Amelia Bernard (1783-1791) dau of Sir Francis Bernard governor of New Jersey then Massachusetts at the wrong time [KB/The Bernards of Nether Winchendon - a family history c1904]

The Collinson/Baker children:
Frances Caroline (Lena) d 1941 unmarried [KB but I have not been able to find a death of the right name/age/date] In 1901 she is a boarder in Malvern and I can't see why.

Julia Christiana (Chrissie) nurse in naval hospitals at Southampton [1891census], Plymouth [1901census]; d Hove district in a nursing home 1952 Sept qr [CR]

Katherine Sibyl (Sibyl) m 22.2.1902 Ealing Francis John Collinson bc 1864 widower barrister son of late Revd George John Collinson; he of Inner Temple, she of Little Haven Ealing; ceremony performed by Revd Edward W Collinson late rector of ?Dalton at Stone Herts [certificate] She d Brighton district in a nursing home 1952 Sept qr. I have never been able to find his birth

Sorry to break off; have just been reminded of a dentist's appointment
To be continued
With best wishes
Rosalind

Sibyl/Frank's marriage: the Revd Edward's parish is Watton-at-Stone Herts, now I check it. I see you have him and his father on the tree so I see where Francis fits in but I don't know why neither of us have met his birth.. I don't know who his first wife was but I accidentally came across a child of that marriage (there may have been more): Alice Elfride Collinson - she marr firstly Lt M. McNeile RN and as a widow marr second (as his second wife) Sir George W D Dick-Lauder bart (1852-1936); she d 2.12.1973 [Burke's Peerage/CR] no children
Nor did Sibyl and Frank have any. She lived with Chrissie in later years but her mind was going when I saw them - I just remember a quiet figure bringing in tea.
Amelia (Emmy) marr 11.1.1898 Christchurch Ealing when of Little Haven Ealing ( a Collinson haunt) Francis Henry Church b c1865 civil engineer son of Richard Frederick Church civil engineer and of 72 Oxford Road Ealing [marriage certificate] They had three children, all living into their 90's

Dear Michael
..
The Collinsons are connections rather than ancestors, sadly, since they are certainly worth having. My grandmother Katharine Baker was the niece of Katharine Baker who married General Collinson ( and his map us a fascinating extra bit of knowledge) and the five Collinson sisters (Bernard did indeed die young - 1878, I believe- but perhaps abroad as I ahve never found the event) were cousins she saw a lot of and was very close to. I met Cousins Chrissie and Sibyl myself in their old (but in Chrissie's case very lucid) age. She (Cousin C) was very interested in genealogy and would have enjoyed all this very much. The Collinsons linked with the Bakers and Bernards (who married Bakers) at two earlier points but you may know that. I can fill in a few details on the Collinson/Baker family which I'll do.Mary Melita's second name was a reference to her birth in Malta but maybe that's obvious. I didn't know her brother was born there too.
Thank you again for all this wealth of interesting knowledge.
With best wishes
Rosalind (and Peter who thanks you for 1861)

Later:

Mary (May) Collinson marr 1904 Revd John Basil Rust (C1855-1943d Isle of Wight) then vicar of All Saints Mile End, later rector of St Audries Taunton. They had two children and no grandchildren; she d 1952. [KB/CR/Crockfords]

Mentions an Arthur Shadwell, same bloke?? He is an MA

"The amateur style, stressed the long swinging stroke with the sharp catch at the beginning giving a substantially smoother movement of the boat and the potential to increase the speed by both increasing the rate and the power in the stroke.

This amateur style was originally exemplified by Thomas Egan at Cambridge and his pupil Arthur Shadwell, who had been taught by Egan while he was a member of the Lady Margaret Boat Club and took the message to Oxford when he migrated to Balliol."

Site also mentions an older brother, Albert Shadwell

Rhythm of the Light Blues faces a stiff examination from heavy mob Mar 26, 2005 The Independent, UK -- Sport

"Internal fat is the great enemy of good wind," said Arthur Shadwell, Oxford's coach in 1846. Hopefully, his present counterpart, Sean Bowden, heeded such wisdom after the Dark Blues weighed in at a record average of 15st 7lb and a record stone and a half heavier per man than Cambridge for tomorrow's Boat Race, which starts at 3. Re All Saints Church Rome

"One of a series of rather short-term chaplains, the Revd Arthur Shadwell, who had been appointed in 1869, saw the need to make moves towards the provision or building of a new church. A statement was authorized to go into the London newspapers appealing for subscriptions."
