The Collinsons connected with the Bakers in two other ways:

General Collinson's mother Amelia was the daughter of the Revd Richard King and Frances Bernard, sister of Amelia who married Captain Baker and thus another daughter of the luckless governor of Massachusetts. Amelia King was one of twins and seemed the frailer but lived to a good age with an enormous family while the healthy twin brother died suddenly when he was about one [KB/The Bernards of NW]

Both the Revds John Collinson and James Baker were given their first livings by a relative on the Bernard side, Shute Barrington, bishop of Durham, who "rejoiced in his power of doing good" [The Bernards of NW] otherwise known as nepotism....

The second link was the marriage of Sophia Baker to the Revd Henry King Collinson. Sophia b 1797 was the granddaughter of Captain Benjamin Baker by his first marriage to a Miss Tathwell - one son Benjamin (1765-1818) who married Sophia Tathwell in 1793, presumably a cousin [KB]

Individual Note:
Now Jula Cecilia Collinson sounds very an interesting person in her own right, despite having an Admiral and a Major General as brothers. Daughter of Rev. John Collinson and Amelia King, she married twice. First to Walter Wilkins, who had banking money ... whose death in 1840 landed her a castle in Wales. Then in 1857 to William Richard Stretton, Justice of the Peace & Deputy? Lieutentant, who died in 1868.

After her first husband's death, she began to write children's books 1855 - 1866 to support her own children and apears to have been quite succesful.

She died in 1878.

JULIA CECILIA STRETTON (1812 - 1878)

The Feminist Companion to Literature in English informs us that Julia Stretton was born in Gateshead, the second daughter of 15 children of Emily [mjc - sic] and the Rev. John Collinson. After her first husband's death, she began to write children's books to support her own children. Her first novel A Woman's Devotion (1855) is the story of a young woman's triumph through self-sacrifice. Two of her books are autobiographical: The Valley of a Hundred Fires (1860) which describes her parents, and The Queen of the County (1864).

Other novels include the highly popular Margaret and her Bridesmaids (1864) and Lords and Ladies (1866). They demonstrate a 'fond enshrining of the past' and display heroines of unwavering goodness.

The 1841 census

From 1841 the census records - compiled once every ten years - include details of individuals and their origins. A picture of the occupants and their lives can be put together even from the sketchy details of the 1841 census.

    Maeslough Castle

The 1841 census gives a limited amount of information: name, age, occupation and whether or not the person was born in the county.
However, there are things that can be learned from the scant information:
Mrs de Winton is in residence on census night, with her 2 children. According to a family tree of the de Wintons, produced by Richard Morgan, former County Archivist for Powys, her husband had died in 1840. Her two sisters, ladies of independent means, are staying with her (again from the family tree, Julia de Winton’s maiden name was Collinson). Mrs de Winton’s occupation is given as ‘Lady’; hardly what would be considered an occupation today, but carrying with it all sorts of duties, obligations and privileges in 1841. Emily Gwenllian de Winton was born in Radnorshire, but her brother Francis was not, presumably the family were at one of their other houses when he was born.
The family had 7 servants living in, but their precise occupations are not given in the 1841 census. It is, however, possible to find the occupation of the father of the family in the Lodge:
    Maeslough Lodge

William Goode and his family came from another county to work for the de Wintons. Their last 2 children were born in Radnorshire, so they must have arrived between 1837 & 1839. The numbers in brackets denote the fact that these people will reappear in other capacities in later censuses.

Source - Fasti Ecclesiae Anglicanae - the higher clergy list http://www.history.ac.uk/fasti/fasti1541b.html

In 1716 John Le Neve published Fasti Ecclesiae Anglicanae, a list of the cathedral clergy of England and Wales. This was revised in 1854 and enlarged to three volumes by T. Duffus Hardy. Despite its many deficiencies, Hardy's edition has been the standard authority since then.

This new edition undertaken by the Institute of Historical Research makes use of the many fresh sources of information now available, applying rigorous standards of scholarship to them. It is being issued cathedral by cathedral. When complete, it will trace the chronology and careers of all the bishops, deans, archdeacons and canons of the cathedral churches of England and Wales from the earliest times to the middle of the nineteenth century, when Crockford's Clerical List began to be published annually. It is being published in three series, 1066-1300, 1300-1541 and 1541-1857.
