Individual Note: Joseph Rathmell appears in the 1881 and 1891 Census as Green Grocer and head of a family living in Burley In Wharfedale where descendents of the family still live today (2005). He was born in Stainburn and appears to have married twice, once to a Mary J and once to a Jane, both from Burley In Wharfedale, (it is also just possible that they are the same person if the J stands for Jane and some license has been taken in reporting age in the Census). He appears to have died in late 1891, aged 40, with his wife taking over the business.
An elusive fellow when it comes to documentation, there is a present no trace of him in the 1871 Census - that might have established his parents, no GRO birth or marriage(s) registration.

His wife's name changes from Mary J to Jane between the 1881 and 1891 Census, so he may have remarried and there certainly is a corresponding Wharfedale registration area index but the closest is and Eliza Jane, not Jane and there is more than one Joseph in the area. Also, a search of Eliza Wilson in the 1881 Census reveals no likely match to 1891 census age/POB.
