Individual Note:
Samuel Hawkridge is the oldest ancestor of Selina Hawksridge who married a Collinson. I've traced him to York but have not been able to trace any earlier family as they are missing from 1841 and 1851 York census records - most probably they were from from that area. Hawkridge is a v-e-r-y rare name and there is a concentration around Knaresbourh, Yorkshire - so that would be my guess for provenance.

In 1841 he is apprenticed as a shoe maker to a John Hardcastle in York.

According to the 1851 Census, he was born in "Old Hayweigh Christ Church" (spelling?) which I assumed but cannot verify is a part of York. There appears to be no parish or church with a similar name. Another possibility is that if, according to Doug Aylward/Hawkridge his father is John Hawkrdige, he might have been born in Derby. But the 1841 Yorks census lists him as born within the county, and again I can't find a likely church or parish in Derby.

Doug Hawkridge/Aylward, direct descendent, thinks it possible his father is John Hawkridge a shoemaker in Derby. After research, I think the relationship is unlikely. This John Hawkridge has 3 children who appear both in census data and in All Saints, Derby, Derbyshire christening records. Significantly, Samuel, of similar age, does not appear in the christening records.

Purely going on the name Samuel, there is a Samuel Hawkridge who gets married in Adel, Yorkshire (LDS IGI) in 1826. Could be be the father? Possibly significantly he does not appear in the 1841, 1851 census index (i.e. his death would explain why Samuel jnr is apprenticed to another family)

Update 2011-03-20: Now thought to be the son of Jonathan Bott of York and his mother was Rebecca HAWKRIDGE.

POSSIBLE SISTER OF SAMUEL:

Genes Reunited team

Hi Micheal Hope you don't mind me contacting you I am looking for the family of a Sarah Hawkridge who married a Percival (or Palse) Metcalfe at York in 1850. They were my g.g.grandparents. Any connection to your Hawkridge family Regards Peter Cossins

Peter,

I'm afraid I can only give more questions than answered.

My Hawkridge tree starts at a Samuel Hawkridge b c1827 unknown location who marries Ellen Harrison in St. Denis in York in 1848. She was born in the village of Bishopthorpe, just outside York and their children were born there too.

Samuel died in 1852 and Ellen became Postmistress of Bishopthorpe and stayed there the rest of her life. One of their children was called Selina.

Given the closeness of marriages and both families having a daughter Selina, I wonder if Sarah and Samuel Hawkridge were siblings. The surname is certainly a rare as hen's teeth and I can't find any trace of multiple Hawkridge families in or close to York.

I see that the Sarah Hawkridge = Palse Metcalfe marriage is listed in the Civil Index as York District Vol 23 Page 711. If you buy the certificate ( http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificate/index.asp#0 ) it should list her parents, I should be interested to know the result if you do

The Hawkridge are not direct relatives of mine so difficult to find in the GenesReunited tree, go instead to http://www.ayeltd.biz/familyhistory. When you find Samuel, click in the "N"otes icon for my notes. I did a bit more digging this morning and put my results below.

Regards,
Michael Collinson

The Hawkridge name is extremely rare. Single instance occur randomly throughout the country (London, Derby for example) but the biggest early cluster is around Knaresbourgh and nearby Great Ouseburn in Yorkshire, after that probably Halifax and Derby - but all in numbers suggesting just a single family.

Thanks very much for your reply and the information.
My Sarah Hawkridge & Palse Metcalfe were married on 29 January 1850 in the parish of St. Margarets Walmgate,York. Sarah was aged 20 so was born 1830. There are no parents named for Sarah on the Marriage certificate, only Palse's father William who I know about.
However one of the witnesses is a JOSEPH LAWTON so there is a possible family connection
Sarah being Samuel sister seems a distinct possibility. Now I've got a clue I'll look into it further. Sarah & Palse are my g.g.grandparents
Thanks again
Peter

Dear Michael I''ve just joined and note that you have connections with the Hawkridges and Collindales. My link is through Samuel Hawkridge (1828) and down the line to Kenneth Samuel Hawkridge (1914-2006) who was my father. I would be very interested in your link. Regards Doug

Michael
Thanks for getting back to me in your 3 messages. Got the 1841 SH by chance Although not confirmed I reckon SH''s father was John H (born 1801- shoemaker) who married
A(E)melia Roome at St Werburghs in Derby on 19.12.1824. Looks like you''ve already made the Harrison and Emmott links from your tree. Tried your web but no luck and will keep trying. I was raised in Richmond Yorks so have a local interest as well. Do you know Colin Hinson? Yorks history buff who inputs a lot to GenUKi. I went to school with him in Richmond.
Keep in touch
Doug (Aylward) name changed from Hawkridge by deed poll in 1946

MJC: Note there are several Hawkridge names in the 1835 Baines directory for Derby, though no shoemakers.
---------------------
Michael Just to let you know that my John Hawkridge, father of Samuel H b. 1827, may NOT be the Derby JH married to Amelia Roome. Just had a note from Arthur Hawkridge who advises that the Derby JH had 3 children - Henry, Frederick and Mary - no sign of a Samuel. So the mystery continues, especially as Samuel is shown in the Census as being born in Yorks. Regards Doug

Hi Mike
We were in touch some time ago re the Collindale/ Selina Hawkridge link. I noted on your excellent FT web that you had John Hawkridge of Derby down as Samuel H’s father. After much research and x-checking with others it would appear that Samuel’s father was one Jonathan Bott of York and his mother was Rebecca HAWKRIDGE. It is all very complicated but I can sent you some of the corr./refs if you are interested.
Best regards
Doug Aylward (previously Hawkridge)

Delighted to meet you too

Yes Ellen's maiden name was Harrison, and she too was born and brought up in Bishopthorpe,
Her father was Joseph,a name that must have been passed down for many, many generations
her mother was Jane nee Young

She married Samuel Hawkridge
9th October 1848 at St Denis York

I was born and brought up in Leeds, but now live at Burnbridge
a small village on the outskirts of Harrogate, so I do know Otley, Beamsley etc.

I have been researching my family for not quite two years now, I get tremendous pleasure from it. I have found a lot of Hawkridges in Knaresborough, but I have a feeling that Samuel and his family came from Whixley.

Like you, because they are not directly related, I haven't as yet researched them much, if at all, I do know that Ellen snr was Post Mistress at Bishopthorpe, and for a time at Dringhouses, but probably ended her days at Bishopthorpe, she was there in 1901, with Lilly Collinson aged 21who was a stenographer.

I am still trying to build my tree, and I have to say, I am not very quick at it, and I am still trying to
"kill" them off, as we are supposed to....if there is any info I can help you with, please don't hesitate to ask....I will have a look
at you site now. Isn't it exciting??

Best Wishes
Jean
