No information found out about him except that there was such a person and he really did marry Yvonne Corte (BMD index 1938). There was some doubt in the family that this was a joke.

Google search (2010) throws up an actor by that name in a play in 1959 and "Fergus Cogley c1938" comes up as an old member on http://www.belvederecollegeunion.ie, Bevedere College Union. Family recollection: "A farmer's daughter thought to be living near Thornaby." - Census data does not bear this out. She was known as "Annie" and, as formally testified by son 'Alan Tweedie Cummings", her family name was Tweedie.

Rita: Granny took over a pub when Grandad died at Billingham. She would not serve men on pay day until they'd been home to give their pay to their wives. Granny was a student nurse. When Grandad died, Winnie remembers seeing a big funeral cortege "comming from Norton" but was not told it was her father.

Auntie Winnie looked after her until she died. Had her shroud made ready and made people look at at. She died in 1941 (Leila says 1947 when Leilas was 19).

Rita was introduced to a Jinnie Swinburn at school and told to look after her as she was a "cousin".

Rita lost twins due to a a miscarraige.

Individual Note:
Summary (by Michael Collinson, great grandson, 2003-2004):

Richard was born as Cumming. Later England census (1881 & 1901) show him as Cummings with an "s".

Born of Richard Cumming and Jane Denholm, 23rd of April, 1840 in the parish of Swinton & Simprin in Berwickshire, Scotland. He appears with his parents in the 1841 Census living in the village of Swinton itself. His father is then an agricultural labourer. The family then appears to have moved to nearby Gordon, Berwickshire where two sisters Elisabeth and Mary Anne were born in 1844 and 1846. This move would be in keeping with the unstable lives agricultural labourers faced at that time. In 1851, the family was living in Melrose, Roxburghshire, though Mary Anne has probably died. Richard's father is still an agricultural labourer though now head of a household large enough to accomodate both the family and 6 lodgers from Ireland.

Now there is a sudden change. In 1861, he is a now a Shipwright, single and living in Bishopwearmouth.

So, where did Richard and his father live meantimes? How did they get into shipbuilding? Who is Jane? Where did they meet if she has family roots in Kirkcudbrightshire, the other side of Scotland from Berwickshire? There are lots of Lauder in the Berwickshire area but not in Kirkcudbrightshire.

Scenario 1: A descendent says family speaks of Richard the younger as a "Castle Douglas" man. My working theory is that father went to Castle Douglas, Kirkkudbrightshire in south-west Scotland and worked in shipbuilding there, since that is his later profession. Coincidently (?) this was owned by a Cummings family. I've scoured Scotland Census records for 1841, 1851,1861, even some of 1871 though and found no trace at all. His second wife Janet Tweedie comes from this area and apparently was a relative of his first wife Jane Lauder.

Scenario 2: Richard the elder drifts south from Berwickshire and gets involved in the shipbuilding industry in Berwick or somewhere in County Durham. That would be more natural than crossing the country to Kirkcudbrightshire and also would explain skills in *iron* shipbuilding - the Castle Douglas operation appears (?) to be wood. I've found no trace of the family in Berwick town 1851 census records - the most likely first stop as it had a burgeoning early ship-building industry then. Search of Co. Durham census records by hand would be overwhelming so I'll wait until they are put on the Internet.

Scenario 2a: A recent development (Dec 2004). David Tweedie, a proven Tweedie AND McVitie relative of Richard's second wife moved to Earlston, Berwickshire in about 18xx, about the time Richard was living in Gordon, 4 miles away. There a coincidences of movements of David's family into the shipbuilding industry that suggest they were very close. In this scenario, wife Jane Lauder is a relative of David Tweedie and they probably meet in Berwickshire.

In 1861, he is a now a Shipwright, single and living in Bishopwearmouth.

In 1862, he appears to be Jarrow, Co. Durham according to the birth of a son Richard. This now narrows down his marriage to Apr-Jun 1861 if his son was conceived and born in wedlock.

In 1871, his first child is born, Jane, and listed as born in Sunderland, Co. Durham in the 1881 Census. This probably means he is living in Bishopwearmouth.

On April 3, 1871 the Census records him as living in Bishopwearmouth with wife Jane, dau. Jane 9 months and a son Richard, 8 years, born Co. Durham - ?Jarrow?. Son Richard unfortunately seems to have died by 1881. Living with Richard the elder is a "grand daughter", Mary A Cumings [sic], 6 years, also born Jarrow - whose child is she?

In July 1873, he son John Alexander is born at 11 Hedley Street, Sunderland, Co. Durham where they are living. He is listed in the birth certificate as an Iron Ship wright.

In 1881 he is a Shipbuilder (Foreman), living in Bishopwearmouth, on the outskirts of Sunderland, in County Durham with his first family by Jane. His father is living in the same town at a different address and is listed as an Iron Ship Builder and a widower. He is married to a Jane Lauder, related somehow to his later second wife, and he has children. From the DOB and place of his eldest child, Jane, he married about 1870 and was living in the Sunderland area since then. He is now a Shipbuilder (Foreman) and his father is also a retired Iron Shipbuilder.

According to descendent Gerry Field, he left Monkwearmouth [sic] in 1883.

In 1891 he is a Shipyard Manager, living in 1, Harewood Terrace, South Stockton, Yorkshire - part of the parish of Thornaby, where he he appears to have remained until his death. The shipyard appears to have been Richardson, Duck, & Co. (iron and steel - and repairers), South Stockton Iron Shipbuilding yard, Trafalgar Street. His first wife Jane is still alive. She would appear to have died in the next 3 months.

In 1892 he remarried to Janet Tweedie and had a second family. Janet Tweedie is reputedly a relation of his first wife and was sent down from Scotland as to look after him.

In 1901 he was a Foreman Shipbuilder and living at 45 Bon Lea Terrace, Thornaby-on-Tees, Yorkshire.

He almost certainly died in Nov-Dec 1905 in Thornaby. Listed as deceased in son Alan's wedding certificate 1923. Apparently died just before son Alan left school at an early age and went to work in a flour mill - a sheer guess would therefore be 1902 - 1909. Search of St. Catherine's Index and FreeBMD shows a Richard Cummings death in Oct-Dec quarter of 1905, registered in "Stockton" - almost certainly Stockton-on-Tees, just a few miles from Thornaby.

There is no clear indication of when and where he married nor if he had any older children, another Richard for instance, that are living with him at the time of the 1881 Census. For example, there is a birth recorded at Houghton le Sping, only 5 miles or so from Bishopwearmouth. May or may not be related:

============
Florence Edith Cummings nee Stuchbury wrote at the end of her life:

"The Cummings are of Highland Scottish descent and the Tweedies, my husband's mother's family, lowland Scottish.
I met two of my husband's aunts once; they were very friendly and very beautiful; both were head-mistresses in Edinburgh. They came to Brighton once.

Alan's - my husband's father, Richard Cummings [married] twice and had two large families, 14 children in all

He was manager of a big northern shipyard. I have never known if it were Richards and Duckworth, or, as it sounded, Richardson, Duckworth.

Richard Cummings invented the under-water plating system, which meant that ships' plates could be repaired without dry docking, saving a lot of time and money. From what I heard, most of the first family were prett y clever. I know there was an artist, a journalist and an economist. I heard no mention of girls.

RC married again a year or so after his first wife's death.

He had six children by his second marriage, Will, Fred, Alan, Kenneth, Athol, Winifred.

Will was peculiar. He did no work, beyond belonging to the St. John's A mbulance Brigade, and seemed to spend most of his time sitting on the do or-step. Ida, his poor wife became a cleaner in the school where he [who ?] used to teach.

I think Fred, tall, auburn and sullen, worked I thin in the steel mills ; Alan left school soon after his father's death and started to work in a flour mill.

When I met him at our Church, he had just become a teacher.

I never knew what Kenneth did. He was the quietest and, I should say, most dependable member of the family.

Fred had a very sweet wife Clare. She had one baby Maureen. who would suck my chin " [end of surviving notes].

Shipbuilder (Foreman) - 1881 Census
Shipyard Manager - Listed in son Alan's wedding certificate.

If Florence Cummings recollections are right, this was Richardson, Duck, & Co. (iron and steel - and repairers), South Stockton Iron Shipbuilding yard, Trafalgar Street.

============
1881 & 1901 Census shows he was born in Scotland. If so, DOB suggests he was probably born in Berwick as per a likely christening record:

Richard Cumming [sic]
Christened: 26 May 1840; Swinton & Simprin, Berwick
Father: Richard Cumming [sic]
Mother: Jane Denholm
