Dear Michael;Thank you for replying.
I know you havent much time at the moment but just thought I would give you a little more info on old John McMurray.
In Kirkcudbright churchyard there is a very old stone
'Here lies the corps of John McMurray late in Sepland died 1780 aged 82 and his wife Jannet Affleck died 1779 aged 72'
He is the earliest we have found in the area but have no proof he was an ancestor of ours

"I have found out that Richard Cummings (the elder) mother was called Anderson, but have not got any further back than that. He appears to have been born out of wedlock so far as we can tell, but presumably his parents subsequently married because he bears the surname Cummings."
"The researcher I employed looked at the Swinton Old Parish Records and found the following:
November 14th. 1813: "Richard Cumming. Then was baptized Richard, illegitimate son of Mary Anderson, daughter of John Anderson, deceased, late weaver in Swinton (born 29th May last) ".
Apparently, the interval between the birth and the baptism was so that the parents could be admonished before the Kirk Session He had a look in the Kirk Session records in Edinburgh, but could not find anything more."
