Thank you for you e-mail regarding Kitty Kirkbride. I looked at your family tree and was very interested.

Frederick Kirkbride was the brother of my Great great grandfather William Kirkbride.

Frederick was a photographer so has anyone that you know got any photos that he would have taken of our ancestors? If so I would really be interested in having copies if relevant or scans as I am putting together images and addresses of my relatives.

Look forward to your reply,

Very likely birth match - mother lived in Lambeth later but census says he was born in Brixton, Surrey.
Probably the Lambeth entry, Brixton registers there. A Frederick William (likely brother) is also born there, though 1911 Census shows them both born Brixton.

Individual Note:
William G.H. Monk born Fort Peddie / Cape Town, South Africa appears to have married my relative Minnie Belton. A family story, which appears to be at least partly true, is that she "Married the last in line of the Dukes of Albamarles, who could have claimed the title Viscount Coldstream". The Dukes of Albamarles are indeed the Monk family and William G.H. Monk can be traced in the 1871 and 1881 England Censi as the grandson of Eliza Anne Monk nee Archer, widow of William Garrow Monk of the same Monk family.

His parents remained a mystery for a long time. The male Monks were not married at the right time. Douglas Monk who runs the One-Name Study for the Monk family appears to have solved the mystery: William Henry Garrow Monk is the son of a first son William Monk (parents Eliza Anne Archer and William Garrow Monk), not previously in my tree, and Ellen Keell.

Source - Douglas Monk via Richard John Kirkland, Genes Reunited, Apr 2008:

Dear Michael,

Just to let you know that I've had contact with Douglas Monk who runs the One-Name Study for the Monk family. I asked him about William Gaum H Monk born c1858 in Cape Town, and he believes it is probably William Henry Garrow Monk born Cape of Good Hope on 8th March 1858. In fact, he would then be the grandson of William Garrow and Eliza Anne - he is the son of William Monk and Ellen (nee Keell).

William Monk was Eliza's first son, baptised in Enfield (where William Garrow was living when he married Eliza Anne Archer) on 20th June 1832.

All the best,
John

The 1871, 1881 and probably 1861 Census shows him as the grandson of Eliza Ann Monk, widow of William Garrow Monk. It is not obvious who the father is, assuming it to be a son rather than unmarried daughter( ) then the known sons are Francis, Henry and John. Francis and John are single in 1871 so that leaves Henry. But he also appears in the 1861 Census as H ?Ganovett? Monk when all three were single. Hmm.

Note1: William H Monks occcupation is shown as a big strongly drawn letter Z, as the profession of one more head of household on the same enumeration page. The columns for "Employer, Worker .." and "If working at home" are blank.

Note2: Clement H. Monk is definitely shown as "Asst. Son" - not clear what this means. Son of an Assistant perhaps?
