John Varty [father]
His wife Mary Graham produced at least 5 children including at the age of 42, Calvert Varty Or “Covey” was bapt. at St Andrew’s, Penrith in 1791.

Calvert Varty
He married Alice Earle in the same church in 1820.
Calvert’s will tells that she was the daughter of John Earle of Warwick Bridge Mill.
Censuses list her birthplace as 1851 Botcherby, 1861 Warwick Bridge, 1871 St Cuthbert.
No bapt. certif. so far traced 1829 Directory lists him as a nailmaker based in Penrith market place.
In 1847 the business moved to brook Street and in 1851 he was living at 61 Burrowgate.
He was also an auctioneer as shown by the 1841 census (Great Dockray) and John’s wedding certif of 1854.

Censuses of 1861 and 1871 have him living at 45 and then 19 Burrowgate perhaps reflecting house renumbering rather than moving. 1873 Directory has him living at 19 Burrowgate as the High Bailiff of the County Court, a court concerned with the recovery of small debts.

died in 1876 and his will proved in 1881 lists his offspring, John, Sarah, Margaret, Alice and Elizabeth

Born: 1701 Addingham [Cumberland or Yorkshire??]

MJC: Almost certainly Cumberland, it borders Langwathby:

"ADDINGHAM PARISH contains the four townships of Gamblesby, Glassonby, Hunsonby with Winskill, and Little Salkeld. It extends about six miles in length from E to W and two and a half in breadth from N to S; is bounded on the east by Hartside Fell, on the west by the river Eden, on the north by Kirkoswald, and on the south by Melmerby and Langwathby parishes. The soil is generally fertile, and in a high state of cultivation. On Finch Fell is a bed of fire stone, of superior quality. It has no village of its own name, the church being situated in the township and manor of Glassonby."
