John Coatsworth (1836-1908)

(photo saved)

"John Coatsworth (1836-1908) was born at Middleton in Teesdale. He started adult life as a lead miner and later a copper miner but then like several other members of his family he became a grocer. By the time he died he described himself as a gentleman and left over £6,600 including nearly sixty properties (most in Lingdale) in his will.

He married Martha Collinson (1841-1901)
who was born at Wemmergill Hall, Lunedale.

John and Martha married at Middleton in Teesdale on 11th July 1861 and had seven children,
Sarah Ann (b. Kirkby Ravensworth 1862-1883)
Mary (b. Kirkby Ravensworth 1863) who married William Oliver
Elizabeth (b. Crook 1866 - 1923) who married Edwin George Rowland
Isabella (b. Guisborough 1871 - before 1881)
Thomas (b. Lingdale 1874) who married Mabel Kerr
Minnie (b. Lingdale 1876 - 1883)
Martha Sarah Minnie (b. Lingdale 1885) who married William Arthur Plews (nephew of EG Rowland)

Information kindly contributed by Shirley John "

"Martha Coatsworth (nee Collinson)

(Photo saved)

The photo is of Wemmergill Hall, Middleton-in-Teesdale where Martha Collinson (John Coatsworth's wife) was born. I believe the Hall was demolished in the 1920s.

I have been very interested to read the information supplied by Shirley John about John Coatsworth & family. The Coatsworths were our great grandparents.
Our grandparents were their daughter Mary Coatsworth (d 1953) & William Oliver (d 1947) who lived in Westgate, Guisborough. William was only allowed two days leave from his work for the wedding so they married on Christmas Day 1897 to have a four day honeymoon Their children were John Coatsworth (1900-1957), Martha Winnifred 1901-1994) & William Ewart (1903-1983.
Minnie Coatsworth married Arthur Plews, a grocer in Westgate, Guisborough. They had five children Graham (who was killed in North Africa during WW2), Arthur (a long time employee of Reckitt & Coleman), Minnie & twins Norman & Nora.

Regards
Gordon Coatsworth Oliver"
