Individual Note:
This is my (Michael John Collinson) gg grandfather. Who his father is is a complete mystery. He is an interesting character, a man who goes from being an itinerant agricultural labourer to being an iron shipbuilder, migrating south from Berwickshire in Scotland to the newly industrial north-east coast of England.

Summary:

Born: 29 May 1813 presumably Swinton & Simprin
Christened: November 14th. 1813 Swinton & Simprin, Berwickshire, Scotland, UK
1839, Married: Jane Denholm / Denham in Swinton. Richard's occupation: labourer.
1839/40: Son Richard born 1839, Swinton & Simprin
1841: Living in Swinton Village "aged 25" (which make his DOB about 1816 ) with wife and son Richard. Agricultural labourer.
1842/3: Son James born in Hume, Berwickshire
1845: Daughter Elizabeth christened in Gordon, Berwick, Scotland, UK [born Nov 1844]. Richard's occupation: labourer.
1846: Daughter Mary Anne christened in Gordon, Berwickshire, Scotland, UK
1848-49: Another daughter Jane is born in Earlston?, Berwickshire.
1851: Living at Clack[????] Toll Bar, Melrose, Roxboroughshire, Scotland. Agricultural Labourer.
1861: Living at High Street, Jarrow, Co. Durham, UK with wife and family. Shipyard labourer.
1871: Living in 73, James Street, Jarrow, Co. Durham with wife, daughter and granddaughter. Ship Builder.
1878: Most likely date for the death of his wife, registered in Sunderland area so he would have moved already.
1881: Living alone in Bishopwearmouth, Durham. Iron Ship Builder. Widower.
Died between 1881 and 1891, most probably 1887 age 75. The 1887 entry is in the Middlesborough area which would be suggest he moved south to be near his son.

"The researcher I employed looked at the Swinton Old Parish Records and found the following:

November 14th. 1813: "Richard Cumming. Then was baptized Richard, illegitimate son of Mary Anderson, daughter of John Anderson, deceased, late weaver in Swinton (born 29th May last) ".

Apparently, the interval between the birth and the baptism was so that the parents could be admonished before the Kirk Session He had a look in the Kirk Session records in Edinburgh, but could not find anything more."

1841 & 1851 Scotland Census - Swinton & Simprin:

Microfilm of the orginal Census enumeration was examined by Michael Collinson, Mar 2003. The conclusions were:

Gerry,

I've looked at the Swinton & Simprin 1841/1851 Census plus some of the surrounding villages included on the same film roll. No breakthrough, though some useful elimination. There is one tantalizing little clue in a James Watson, Engineer living with Richard Cumming in 1841.

(1) Richard Cumming 25 Agricultural Labourer, Jane Cumming 25, Richard Cumming 1 appear in the 1841 Census in the village Swinton itself, no house or street number. Note the ages are not quite what we'd expect.

(2) Living with them is a James Watson 25, Engineer. On the question "If born in Scotland, state whether in county or otherwise" is written "No" and "Whether Foreigner, or whether Born in England or Ireland" is blank, so apparently Scottish birth. There are three other "Engineer" living in the village: David ?Shan 25, occupying the whole of one dwelling unit with wife and son; Thomas Wells 40 and Robert Dun 20, living in the house of George Denham and family. All appear to be Scottish and born outside Berwickshire except for Thomas Wells. Of other occupations there is a "Road Contractor" and some mysterious "Cotton N.S.W" or "Cotton No. 2" - all other occupations are what you'd expect in a small rural village.

Looking up the LDS 1881 England Census, throws up 28 James Watson so "born" 1815 or 1817.
The only vaguely possible match based on profession (*) is interesting:
James Watson, age 64 (one year later than would be expected), Shipwright, b. Sunderland living at 5 Thompson St, Bishopwearmouth, Durham, England. His wife and large family are also all born Sunderland so no hint as to travels.
* With the exception of an unemployed iron turner, born Scotland, living Lancashire.

(3) Richard, Jane and family are not in the 1851 Census. I found not a single other Cumming or variant. Note that someone on one of these exchange look-up fora already looked for them in Bishopwearmouth in 1851 and they are not there.

(4) No sign of Richard the older's father or mother as I had been hoping.

(5) There are lots of Anderson and some Denholm/Denham - I've noted them to see if I can piece together any family picture later.

1851 Done:
Swinton, Simprin, Mordington, Nentham, Langston, Polwarth, Fogo, Eccles, Dunse, Ladykirk, Whitsome & Hilton, Hutton.

To do: Edrom

Individual Note:
My great grandmother, and from census data her name was certainly Sarah and she was definitely born in Gateshead, County Durham UK. It is now certain that her maiden name was Rutherford (not Davison as I previously believed).

Certainly, Sarah was born c1832 in Gateshead, Durham and spent most of her adult life in the Newcastle, Northumberland area. She married John Dunn from Ireland. She appears to have died in 1908.

An analysis of the 1851 England Census shows 5 Sarah borns Gateshead of which Sarah Rutherford is one ... and then a John Dunn and a Sarah Rutherford appear in the same BMD marriage index for Jul-Sep 1851. Purchases of the birth certificate of daughter Ellen indeed gives mother's maiden name as Rutherford.

From census and Latter Day Saints parish records, she APPEARED to be the daughter of Francis Rutherford, an agricultural labourer, and Hannah. However, tracing this family through later censi, shows Sarah Rutherford, unmarried, living with them in the 1861 census ... after she is married and definitely shown as mother of Ellen Dunn in 1852. Purchase of the John Dunn / Sarah Rutherford marriage certificate shows her father to be George Rutherford, which matches an 1841 Census entry.

OUT OF DATE: A comparison of census and marriage index data previously highly suggests that the wife of John Dunn and my great grandmother was Sarah Davison or Davidson, daugher of a Mary Davidson (maiden name unknown) who was born in Scotland around 1794.

There first definite record of him is in the 1861 England Census, living at 5, Marlbro' Street, Westgate, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland. He was born in Ireland, but, as yet, no clue as to where. Tracing backwards, it is possible that his wife Sarah, is Sarah Rutherford and they married in 1852. There are also some possible 1841 and 1851 England Census entries. Could he have perhaps emigrated as a result of the 1845-1847+ Potato Famine?
