Varty, John
Bought the rights to collect tolls from the turnpikes prob at auction.
Once lessee appointed, would have to pay month’s rent in advance to the treasurer of turnpike trust upon taking possession of the toll house and to continue paying one month in advance upon pain of forfeiting his deposit. Two sureties in support of claim also needed.

Family story of how, one night, he frightened off two suspected highwaymen with a blunderbuss.

He was baptised at the Sandygate Wesleyan Chapel, Penrith in 1823. Censuses between 1841 and 1858 list him as a nailmaker living in Little Dockray in 1841 and Middlegate 1858.
In 1861 he was an auctioneer living in Skirsgill, in 1871 he lived at the now demolished Milestone House toll bar, while the 1881 census has him as a marker gardener at 154 Bridge Lane.

He married twice.
Firstly to Ann Bird, a domestic servant of Bishops Yard, Penrith and then to dressmaker and farmer’s daughter, Elizabeth Bird. He first married Elizabeth at Gretna Hall in January 1854, the second time, a month later, in Penrith.
Both lived in Penrith where, at the time, he was a nailmaker. Of his 13 children, Frederick was the last, dying in 1951.

Robert Varty
Kindly. Showered Calvert and the rest with gifts at Christmas.
Would take his grandchildren on walks in the country on Sunday afternoons.
An extensive knowledge of nature. Had a large collection of rare and ancient books, many leather bound. Kept at rear of his house in a large glass roofed room. Bought them from local gentry at their deaths.
Born 1859, Penrith. I871 census lists him as 12, a scholar, living in Skirsgill, Penrith.
Soon after, (according to the obit. Of his sister, Alice, in the Cumberland and Westmorland News 1947) began apprenticeship as a grocer with his uncle in Birkenhead. In 1881 married Jane Kegg in Birkenhead.1881 census: lodging at 12 New Ferry Road, Lower Bebington, Cheshire.
The1882 baptism certif. of his daughter, Alice in Penrith describes him as a grocer as does the birth certif of his son John Calvert in 1885.
He was living then at 8 Jordan Place, Toxteth.
However, the 1891 bapt. certif of daughter, Eliza Jessie has Robert back as a grocer’s assistant. By 1910 though a directory lists him as a grocer with his brother Joseph at 11 Angel Lane, Penrith.
Directories 1920-1925 list him with his wife as grocers in the Cornmarket.
His obit. In the Penrith Herald mentions his left leg being amputated during the last few weeks of his illness and that for some years he had been an office bearer at Lowther Street Presbyterian Church.
Reported to be ‘progressive in public affairs, but took no active part.’
His gravestone reads
‘ sacred to the memory of Robert Varty beloved son of John and Elizabeth Varty who died September 2nd 1927 aged 68. His wife Jane who died December 28th 1933 aged 73 years. Of Harry beloved son of the above who gave his life for his country August 9th 1918 aged 20.
He lies in Italy mother’
Buried Penrith
One of his sons was Harry Ramsden killed in WWI, he was ‘being carried away on a stretcher when they were all blown up’ (cv)

Hi Michael,

Good to hear from you again, I didn't realise it was you I'm not at all sure I'm the authority, I've gone quite wide, but Mark Williamson has gone into more depth, whatever, I like to share what I have-always with the caveat that It might not be right.

Interestingly the only bit of info you have that I'm not sure is right is the date of death for Frederick Varty 1951. I am sure I remember him tending his vines at Page Hall (home of my grandparents) and I was born in 1954

Happy hunting.
Annabel

??? All I had was "After Mar 1901" May be I have a reference under another Varty??

Note2: There is a Raine family from Romaldkirk living next door. A Middleton Collinson connection jsut may be??
Note3: There is a free school endowed by a relative Septimus Collinson about 200m south of their house, probably Jane Collinson was a/the teacher there?
