Farleigh Hungerford is a small hamlet some eight miles south east of the historic city of Bath. Today, its only feature is the ruins of the medieval castle which are open to the public and well worth a visit.

...
By 1701 the Castle was a ruin and used as a "quarry" to provide material to build cottages and the Manor House became the seat of the family of Houlton from Trowbridge who had bought the estate in 1730 and it remained in their hands until 1891.

...
THE HOULTON FAMILY

Joseph Houlton of Bradford-on-Avon was in the wool trade in both Bradford and Trowbridge and bought Farleigh Castle with all that remained of the land in 1730. He then proceeded to build a large Manor House about half a mile from the ruined castle using a great deal of stone and stone ornaments from the ruins. He died in 1765 and the Manor and the estate remained in the Houlton family until 1899 when Sir Edward Houlton died with no male heir and it was sold to Earl Cairns in 1906.

The Houlton family boasted a number of prestigious members - Rear Admiral John Houlton (died 1791) and Sir George Houlton (died 1862) were both distinguished officers in the Napoleonic Wars; Joseph Houlton
was an overseer of the Parish along with Joshua Shrapnel, father of General Henry Shrapnel who invented the grenade used in the Napoleonic Wars. He lived at Midway Manor between Wingfield and Bradford-on-Avon.

Members of the Houlton family set up various charities to bring relief to the poor, for the repair of the Chapel in the Castle and to assist school children. Being very small by today's standards they have all been wound up with the exception of The Houlton's Educational Foundation which still provides a useful source of grants for children in higher education establishments. At some date during the 19th Century, the Houltons also provided a piped water supply to most of the village and some of the houses they owned in Tellisford. The supply of water was obtained from a spring in the "Jousting" field and piped to one of the water wheels on the other side of the road (now part of Castle House). From there the water was lifted to the water tower nearly opposite the Church and then on to the Manor House and the village. This system remained in use until 1970 when a supply of mains water was laid on.

History of the Bath Lodge Hotel:

...

The spendthrift Sir Edward Hungerford ruined the family and the castle, being forced to sell up in 1685. A Trowbridge clothier, Joseph Houlton, bought the Farleigh estate in 1702 but not the castle itself. His son, Joseph Houlton, junior, lived at the home farm, an old gabled house, which he turned into a gentleman's residence known as Farleigh House. He also created a 'grandly timbered' deer park of 120 acres. In 1730 he bought the castle and at once announced that he was pulling it down and selling the materials.

Farleigh House remained a modest one until Lt. Colonel John Houlton, a devotee of the Gothic Revival, succeeded to the estate in 1806. He enlarged and altered the house using the fashionable medieval style and spent £40,000 - perhaps a million pounds in today‘s values - on embellishments including hot houses, conservatories, stabling and six lodges. These included the Castle Lodge, now the Bath Lodge Hotel, built between 1806 and 1813, and comparable in scale and atmosphere to the Gloucester Lodge at nearby Lullington, although the Bath Lodge is more solid. It is an attractive building, redolent of Arthurian romance, and a perfect little fortress complete with towers, battlements and portcullis and the obligatory heraldic shields, in this case bearing the coat-of-arms of John Houlton and his wife, Mary Anne Ellis.
