Hi Michael,

Harry was my grandfather's uncle, my grandfather being Admiral Sir Dudley de Chair, who from 1924-1930 followed in Harry's footsteps as Governor of NSW. My great-grandmother was Harry's sister, Francis Emily (I've guessed her d.o.b.), who married Dudley Raikes de Chair, a friend of Harry's I believe.

I've opened my family tree to you, though it's not nearly so comprehensive or informative as yours.

I'm having difficulties with the genes reunited website in that it frequently produces error messages when I try to save new information, sometimes losing the information I've entered so I have to start again To check whether this is due to the Apple Safari browser I normally use, is this a problem you have ever encountered? And if not, which browser do you use?

Somewhere among family papers in our loft I may have more family tree information, but unfortunately at present have not had (and do not have) time to investigate further

Regards,
Diana Daly

Encyclopedia: Sir Harry Rawson

Admiral Sir Harry Holdsworth Rawson, KCB (1843-1910), is chiefly remembered now for having overseen the British 'Punitive Expedition' of 1897 that burned and looted the city of Benin, now in Nigeria. No shame was attached to the event at the time, and Admiral Rawson was appointed Governor of New South Wales, 27 May 1902 - 27 May 1909. The first naval officer since Captain Bligh to hold the post, he proved so popular that his term was extended.

Admiral Rawson was commander of British naval forces at the Cape of Good Hope at the time, and the Expedition was regarded in British circles largely as a stroke of disciplined and coordinated planning:
"In twenty-nine days a force of 1200 men, coming from three places between 3000 and 4500 m. from the Benin river, was landed, organized, equipped and provided with transport. Five days later the city of Benin was taken, and in twelve days more the men were re-embarked, and the ships coaled and ready for any further service." (Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1911).

27 May, 1902 to 27 May 1909

Historic Houses Trust]

Twenty first governor of New South Wales.

Born in England in 1843.

First naval officer since Captain Bligh appointed Governor of New South Wales.

After the New South Wales Constitution Act had been passed and amended, the power of the Governor to fix the time and the place for holding every session of the Legislative Council and Assembly and the power to dissolve the Legislative Assembly was reiterated.

Instrumental in deciding the replacement Premier for Sir John See.

Other changes that occurred with Federation were that from 1902 official communication with England now came through the Governor-general’s office rather than through separate state Governor’s offices.

Dispatches from the Imperial Office now came directly to the Governor-general who then passed them on to the relevant state governments.

He had "a capacity for suggesting improvements or modifications to the State Government" without giving offence.

In order to save the amount of time and money he felt was wasted in parliament, he suggested that, apart from party leaders, "all others may only speak as long as to take up three columns of Hansard when reported and if they desire to continue a charge of ten shillings a column shall be made."

Tried to smooth the bitter religious divides and Commonwealth-State relations.

Promoted the 'ultimate formation of a separate navy' for Australia.

Generally supported the Governor-general but insisted the communications between State Governors and the Colonial Office remain confidential. Believed strongly in state rights.

Devoted to his charitable and social duties including Masonic Lodges.

Due to his popularity, his his term was extended.
Died in London in 1910.

Collinson, Peter (1694-1768), English Quaker and woolen merchant of London. "In the very early part of my life," Collinson recalled, "I had a love for gardening." He became a fellow of the Royal Society when he was 35. His garden at Mill Hill near London was famous: "My Garden is now a Paradise of Delight," he wrote to Linneaus in September 1765. Collinson imported seeds from all over the world. From his contacts in North America he supplied boxes of seeds and plants to English dukes and earls, and to such well-known gardeners as William Penn and Philip Miller of the Chelsea Physic Garden. It is said that what Collinson and his North American coterie of correspondents did for both English and American gardens has no parallel elsewhere at any other time in garden history.

(Dr. L. Hn.).
===============================
Collinson, Peter, 1694-1768

Peter Collinson, English merchant and naturalist, was born January 14, 1694 near Windermere. His parents raised him in the Quaker tradition, although later in life he would withdraw from the Society of Friends. In his youth, Collinson's interests lay in the natural sciences. His abilities in entomology and in systematizing the collection of flora and fauna gained him the attentions leading naturalists of his day, including Sir Hans Sloane, of the British Royal Society. Collinson and his brother built upon their father's cloth business, opening the business to trans-Atlantic trad

Widely successful as a merchant, Collinson's trade with the American colonies enabled him to further pursue scientific interests. Collinson never voyaged to America himself, but he provided financial and academic support to the endeavors of other naturalists, including botanist and ornithologist Mark Catesby. His letters appear in the correspondence of most noted European and American scientists of the early eighteenth century, including Carolus Linnaeus, Benjamin Franklin and John Bartram. For his American correspondents, Collinson served as intermediary, providing mentorship, regular updates on studies in European publications, and access to the English scientific community. For John Bartram, Collinson initiated a subscription service, whereby the American naturalist would send regular botanical specimens to a group of British collectors. It was Collinson who introduced Benjamin Franklin to contemporary European studies on electricity. He published studies conducted by American friends in the papers of the British Royal Society, to which he was elected in 1728.

In 1724, Collinson married Mary Bushnell, with whom he had one son and one daughter. On their estate in Hendon, Collinson created a botanical garden on which he experimented with new means of cultivation. He exchanged plants with American growers, introducing many new plant species on both ends of the transactions. Notable is a long-standing exchange of flower varieties with Virginia gardener George Custis.

Peter Collinson died August 11, 1768.

COLLINSON, PETER (1694-1768) - Naturalist, Botanist, Mercer, corresponded with Benjamin Franklin

Collinson, Peter (1694-1768). British. Merchant and amateur naturalist in London, corresponded with many scientists. Made Linnaeus and his works widely known.

“Description of the Miscellaneous Plate of Horn-tailed Turtle.” Gentleman’s Magazine, 28, 1758.
“An Extract of Mr. Wm. (sic) Bartram’s Observations in a Journey (September 5–25, 1765) Up the River Savannah in Georgia, with his Son, on Discoveries.” Gentleman’s Magazine, 37, 1767. Edited & paraphrased by Collinson.
----------------------
Dr. Richard Hill was born in Anne Arundel County in 1698. He spent the first half of his adult life, until the age of 41, living on a tract called Scorton, just outside the town limits of London Town. He like other family members were ship owners and merchants. But Hill also trained as a physician, perhaps apprenticed to a cousin who practiced in Philadelphia.

As a physician, Hill had a natural interest in plants for their medicinal properties. He made connections with amateur scientists in England who were eager for samples of North American plants. He also corresponded with Peter Collinson, a member of the Royal Society of London. The Royal Society supported and encouraged scientific exploration of the New World. And it was Collinson who directed John Bartram, America's foremost naturalist, to visit London Town and meet Richard Hill. Hill and Collinson were both prolific correspondents. No doubt the letters they exchanged were a mother lode of information about plants in the London Town area, unfortunately those letters have yet to come to light and we are left with the names of only four plants that Hill sent to England: tall goldenrod (Solidago altissima) was handsomely illustrated in John Martyn’s Historia plantarum rariorum, published in 1728 and one of the earliest works with color- printed plates; two others, Jerusalem Oak (Chenopodium botrys, a species of lamb's quarters) and Quinzy Root (Eryngium yuccifolium, now known as rattlesnake master), were commented on in correspondence with the Royal Society; the fourth, Cassia marilandica, or wild senna, exists as a dried specimen in the Sloane Herbarium, a collection of the British Museum in London.

Although Per’s phenomenal gift for languages was unaffected, he was left with epilepsy and memory loss. One of the matters to slip through the net of memory was the location of a letter written by the Quaker naturalist Peter Collinson to Solander, in October 1767. Per had noted the existence of this letter in a working calendar of correspondence, but he simply could not remember where it was held. Shortly before we were obliged to hand our manuscript to Melbourne University Press, he suddenly remembered that it was among Benjamin Franklin’s papers in the American Philosophical Society’s collection in Philadelphia. Keen to offer our readers a comprehensive collection of Solander’s correspondence, I sent an urgent fax to Philadelphia explaining our project and our looming deadline, but was very disappointed to learn that the original letter could not be found. Then the librarian remembered that there was a photostat, dating from the 1950s, in the Franklin Collection at Yale University Library. It is hard for me to describe the pleasure and relief I felt on receiving that eighteenth- century letter from Yale the following morning. It is not often that you receive a fax from someone who has been dead for nearly 230 years, telling you that Benjamin Franklin is coming for the weekend

Two other notable botanists of the time, and long-distance friends of Clayton, were Peter Collinson (1694-1768), a London mercer with business interests in North America, and his protégé in Philadelphia, John Bartram (1699- 1777). Collinson encouraged Clayton to collect mosses and other non-flowering plants, and also introduced him to Bartram who was later (in 1765) to be appointed the King's botanist.

Linnaeus recommended to the Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg that Solander be appointed Professor of botany, but the latter refused the position after listening to the advice of his friend Peter Collinson, who had recommended Solander to be appointed Assistant Librarian at the British Museum. In 1763 the new Assistant Librarian began the task of cataloguing the natural history collections of the British Museum. Possibly before this time or certainly shortly after the British Museum appointment he came to the attention of (Sir) Joseph Banks, the British naturalist and member of the Royal Geographic Society. At the time Banks was a mere 20 years of age, but such was his reputation that he was engaged to accompany James Cook on his first voyage to the South Seas. He and Solander would have undertaken the responsibility to search out new flora and fauna, to collect where possible and record those species that were found, an onerous task..

Chapter: Biographical Memoirs OF PETER COLLINSON, F.R.S. & F.S.A. AND HIS LETTERS TO LINNEUS.

PETER COLLINSON, F. R. S. and F. S. A. one of
the earliest and most constant correspondents of
Linnaeus, was highly distinguished in the circle of
Naturalists and Antiquaries in London for nearly
half a century. He belonged to the Society of the
Quakers ; and his upright, benevolent, active character
did honour to his religious persuasion. His
family is said to have come from Westmoreland.
He was born Jan. 28, 1693-4, in a house opposite
to Church-alley, St. Clement's-lane, Lombard-
street, according to a manuscript memorandum of
his own, communicated by A. B. Lambert, Esq. V. P. L. S. ;
but he resided, for many years, at
the Red Lion in Gracechurch-street, as a wholesale
woollen-draper, where he acquired an ample fortune.

He married, in 1724, Mary the daughter of Michael
Russell, Esq. of Mill-hill, Hendon. This lady died
iQ 1753> leaving him two children — a son named
Michael ; and a daughter, Mary, married to the late
John Cator, Esq. of Beckenham, Kent. They are
said to have inherited much of the taste and amiable
character of their father.
Mr. Collinson appears to have occupied, in the
earlier part of his life, a country-house and garden at
Peckham in Surrey (where his brother had also a
garden); from whence he removed, in April 1749,
to Ridgeway-house at Mill-hill, and he was two
years in transplanting his collection. The English
gardens are indebted to him for the introduction of
many new and curious species, which he acquired
by means of an extensive correspondence, particularly
from North America. Among these was the
Collinsonia canadensis, so called by Linnaeus, who
has given a beautiful engraving of this plant in his
Hortus Cliffbrtiamis. It was first imported in
1735.
The following Letters of Mr. Collinson evince his
ardent and genuine love of nature, especially of the
vegetable tribes ; nor do they less display a character
of true piety, cheerfulness, and benevolence,
well suited to so virtuous and soothing a pursuit.
He enjoyed, throughout a long life, the communications
of most cultivators of science in general ; for
he interested himself about every new or useful discovery,
and was one of the first who attended to the (
then recent) wonders of electricity ; on which sub-
